EDUCATION/FAIR COMMITTEE MEETING
Monday, July 6, 2009
9:00 a.m.
UWEX Conference Room
Lancaster, WI
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Steve Adrian. Present, in addition to Chairman
Adrian were Lynn Moris, Bob Keeney, Vince Loeffelholz, Kyle Vesperman, John Patcle, Ted
Bay, Dolores Schwantes, Joe Lolwing, Bob Middendorf, Tim Jerrett, Greg Larsen and Betsy
Olson.
Motion by Kyle Vesperman, seconded by Lynn Moris, that the meeting was in compliance with
the open meeting law. Motion carried.
Motion by Vince Loeffelholz, seconded by Bob Keeney, to approve the agenda. Motion carried.
Motion by Bob Keeney, seconded by Vince Loeffelholz, to approve the minutes of the meeting
held June 22, 2009 with changes. Motion carried.
Tim Jerrett, President of the Grant County Cattlemen Association was present asking to waive
the fee for use of tables & chairs.
Motion by Bob Keeney, seconded by Lynn Moris, to waive the fee for use of tables and chairs
by the Cattlemen Association for the event held on July 3. Motion carried.
Greg Larsen, representing the Potosi Brewery, was present to discuss Potosi tap beer and root
beer sales at the Grant County Fair.
Joe Lolwing gave the grounds and maintenance report. He spoke with Sloan Implement about
the repair of the mower. The cost will be reduced from $1026.18 to $263.25; $508.62 from
warranty coverage and $254.31 for customer satisfaction. He received information from Dave
Hippenbecker of Atlas Roofing regarding repair of the roof over the entrance to the Extension
Office. Joe should get information on what the cost would be to have an engineer look at the
Youth & Agriculture Center to see if a pitched roof could be put on. He also gave a report on
Droessler's progress repairing the building. The memory pedestal for the Biefers should be
placed so the print on the plaque is facing the flag pole and read from that direction. Joe should
start buying energy efficient light bulbs for the buildings on the grounds.
Motion by Lynn Moris, seconded by Vince Loeffelholz, to accept Atlas Roof repair cost of $375
to repair the roof over the Extension Office entrance. Motion carried.
Motion by Bob Keeney, seconded by Kyle Vesperman to allow Betsy Olson to store a trailer in
the Crops Building in July and waive the fee. If the Crops Building is in use Betsy will need to
remove the trailer for that time. Motion carried.
The Fennimore Lions' Club is in the process of removing their building from the grounds. Joe
took care of arranging to have the electricity to the building removed prior to the Club starting
their work.
Ted Bay presented UW-Extension business.
Dave Wachter, Dairy & Livestock Agent, gave his agent report. The state will not be replacing
the vacant position of the UW-Extension Swine Specialist. Agriculture agents from five counties
will help cover some aspects of the position. One aspect of this position is conducting PQA Plus
training and on -site -farm assessments. Assessments of farms must be completed by the end of
2010 which may include out of county travel.
Motion by Vince Loeffelholz, seconded by Kyle Vesperman, to approve the Grant County UW-
Extension Dairy & Livestock Agent, Dave Wachter, to participate in the state swine team.
Motion carried.
Dolores Schwantes presented Fair and Fairgrounds business.
Motion by Lynn Moris, seconded by Bob Keeney, to allow Premier Co-op to hold their annual
event as usual on the fairgrounds. Motion carried.
Motion by Kyle Vesperman, seconded by Vince Loeffelholz to accept the contract with Joe Ellis
for the Labor Day weekend race. Motion carried.
Betsy Olson was present to discuss Fairest of the Fair program. The importance of a strong
Fairest of the Fair Committee was emphasized. The UW-Extension office will provide
educational programs for participants.
Motion by Vince Loeffelholz, seconded by Kyle Vesperman to adjourn until July 20, 2009 at
9:00 a.m.
