HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Feb 1 2010 (2)AGRICULTURE AND EXTENSION EDUCATION/FAIR COMMITTEE MEETING Monday, February 1, 2010 9:00 a.m. UWEX Conference Room Lancaster, WI The meeting was called to order by Chairman Steve Adrian. Present, in addition to Chairman Adrian were Lynn Moris, Bob Keeney, Vince Loeffelholz, Kyle Vesperman, Ted Bay, Dolores Schwantes, Joe Lolwing, Loren and Bev Lane, John Adametz, Betsy Olson, Joe Krantz, Mike Raisbeck, Maxine Wachter, Dave Timmerman, Craig Temple and Curt Yaun. Motion by Lynn Moris, seconded by Bob Keeney, the meeting was in compliance with the open meeting law. Motion carried. Motion by Bob Keeney, seconded by Kyle Vesperman, to approve the amended agenda. Motion carried. Motion by Bob Keeney, seconded by Kyle Vesperman, to approve the minutes of the meeting held January 18, 2010. Motion carried. Joe Lolwing gave the grounds and maintenance report. He ordered a larger heater for the milk house because the one ordered previously was too small. Joe was instructed to wait to proceed with the milk house heater and a heater for the fair office until after the Focus on Energy audit is completed. Deltra 3 is still researching the membrane roof. Joe reported on sealants for the grandstand and will get additional information. Dolores Schwantes presented Fair and Fairgrounds business. John Adametz and Loren and Bev Lane were present representing the Open Class Draft Horse Show. They would like to have the show held in front of the grandstand on Saturday of the 2010 fair. Horses should be on the ground at 9:00 a.m. with judging starting at 9:30 a.m. Motion by Kyle Vesperman, seconded by Lynn Moris, to move the location of the Open Class Draft Horse Show to the area in front of the grandstand on Saturday, August 21, 2010, starting at 9:00 a.m. and concluding by 4:00 p.m. Motion carried. Betsy Olson informed the committee that was she was asked to be an adult advisor on the Wisconsin 4-H Youth Leadership Council. The committee supports her involvement. Joe Krantz, from Hard Hit Promotions was present to discuss demo derbies at the fair. Motion by Bob Kenney, seconded by Vince Loeffelholz, to have Hard Hit Promotions hold two shows on Sunday, August 22, of the 2010 Grant County Fair. The first show will be at 12:00 noon and the Night of Destruction will begin at 6:00 p.m. The cost is $4500 for two shows with all other terms to be discussed. Motion carried. Maxine Wachter was present to discuss the rabbit building ventilation and lighting. It was decided to stay with the ceiling fans that are there now, replacing one and check a second noisy one for possible replacement. Joe will check on lighting options for brighter lights for evening viewing, possibly higher wattage or more bulbs. Maxine also discussed working on ways to expand the rabbit project to get younger children interested in 4-H projects. Motion by Kyle Vesperman, seconded by Vince Loeffelholz to have Joe price two industrial fans of the same size to replace two of the fans in the rabbit barn. Motion carried. A list of recommended fair book changes were reviewed. Motion by Vince Loeffelholz, seconded by Bob Keeney to move rabbit showmanship to Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. as well as to change rabbit classes to be judged by age not weight. The rest of the rabbit show will remain at 11:00 a.m. on Friday. Also, to move the poultry show to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. Motion carried. Motion by Bob Keeney, seconded by Vince Loeffelholz, to create a class for Shorthorn and eliminate the Ayshire class. Ayshire will fall in the class Any Other Breeds. Motion carried. Motion by Bob Keeney, seconded by Lynn Moris, to accept recommended fair book changes as listed with the exception of the Foods, Mechanical Projects, and Ceramics categories. Motion carried. Mike Raisbeck, Craig Temple, and Curt Yaun were present for discussion with interest of continuing the races in Grant County. Mike Raisbeck shared the name of Bill Sheffield as being a person possibly interested in being a promoter. Fair entertainment was discussed with the committee agreeing that they would pursue an entertainment tent. Ted Bay presented UW-Extension business. Agent performance reviews will be held on February 17, 2010. Lynn Moris announced she does not want to pursue being a member of the Agriculture & Extension Education Committee/Fair Board if she wins the election. Motion by Lynn Moris, seconded by Vince Loeffelholz, to approve passing the livestock claim from Lancaster Vet Clinic in the amount of $347.50 on to the full county board. Motion carried. Motion by Bob Keeney, seconded by Kyle Vesperman, to adjourn until February 17, 2010. Motion carried.
