EDUCATION/FAIR COMMITTEE MEETING
Monday, March 15, 2010
9:00 a.m.
UWEX Conference Room
Lancaster, WI
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Steve Adrian. Present, in addition to Chairman
Adrian were Lynn Moris, Bob Keeney, Vince Loeffelholz, Kyle Vesperman, John Patcle, Ted
Bay, Dolores Schwantes, Joe Lolwing, Joyce Roling, Karin Peacock, Chasity Bennett, Steve
Braun, Scott Chyko, Holly Rands and Tory Luckey.
Motion by Kyle Vesperman, seconded by Lynn Moris, to move to closed session. Roll call vote
was taken and passed unanimously. Motion carried.
Motion by Kyle Vesperman, seconded by Bob Keeney, to return to open session. Motion
carried.
Motion by Kyle Vesperman, seconded by Bob Keeney, the meeting was in compliance with the
open meeting law. Motion carried.
Motion by Vince Loeffelholz, seconded by Lynn Moris, to approve the agenda. Motion carried.
Motion by Bob Keeney, seconded by Vince Loeffelholz, to approve the minutes of the meetings
held March 1 & 2, 2010. Motion carried.
Ted Bay presented UW-Extension business.
Motion by Vince Loeffelholz, seconded by Bob Keeney, to approve UW-Extension and Youth &
Ag Center vouchers. Motion carried.
FPD scholarship applications will be reviewed.
Karin Peacock, Grant County Master Gardener Association president, gave a presentation on the
association and discussed the plant sale held in the Crops Building. She also shared information
about what proceeds from the sale are used for.
Motion by Kyle Vesperman, seconded by Vince Loeffelholz, to waive the rental fee for the
Crops Building for the Master Gardener Plant sale on May 8 and for setup on May 7. Motion
carried.
Joe Lolwing gave the grounds and maintenance report. The back stop in the Show Barn is
completed. Joe will contact the Grant County Highway Department to speak with Randy Franks
or Dave Lambert to discuss the possibility of the highway department performing the work to
seal the concrete area in the Grandstand.
Motion by Vince Loeffelholz, seconded by Kyle Vesperman, to purchase the concrete seal
product that the Grant County Highway uses. Motion carried.
Dolores Schwantes presented Fair and Fairgrounds business.
Joe will prepare an itemized list of items in the Horse Barn, with and without value, to present to
the Public Property Committee which meets 3/24. Joe will contact Craig Hollingsworth to let
him know the horse barn may be removed.
A 50/50 raffle will be held at the 2010 fair. A point person is needed to help organized the raffle.
The District 3 Fair meeting will be held in Green County.
Exhibitor and gate fees were discussed.
Motion by Bob Keeney, seconded by Lynn Moris, to leave admission prices for the 2010 fair
same as in the past, with the exception of the early purchase price for the All-Event Pass which
will be $20, and the Night of destruction which will be $8. Motion carried, with two no votes.
Dolores received a letter stating Mystique Casino will no longer sponsor Senior Citizens Day on
Friday of the fair.
There is no one interested in promoting racing at the Grant County Fairgrounds for the 2010
season.
Chasity Bennett, Lancaster Chamber of Commerce, was present to discuss using the fairgrounds
the weekend of July 16, 17, and 18, 2010. Events are in the planning stage and Chasity will keep
in touch with the committee with on-going plans.
Motion by Lynn Moris, seconded by Kyle Vesperman, to allow the Lancaster Chamber of
Commerce to use the Fairgrounds with no cost for rent. The Chamber will be charged for utility
and garbage expenses. Motion carried, with one no vote.
Steve Braun, Emergency Management, was present to request holding the Public Safety Expo in
conjunction with Southwest Wisconsin Technical College at the Fairgrounds.
Motion by Kyle Vesperman, seconded by Vince Loeffelholz, to approve the Fair vouchers.
Motion carried.
Dolores will invite the organizations working the food and beer stands at the fair to a committee
meeting.
Motion by Vince Loeffelholz, seconded by Lynn Moris, to approve passing the livestock claim
from Platteville Veterinary Clinic in the amount of $125.95 on to the full county board. Motion
carried.
Recess at 12:15 p.m.
Reconvene at 1:05 p.m.
Scott Chyko from Delta 3 opened bids for roof improvements for the Youth & Ag Center. There
were four bidders: Walsdorf Roofing, Inc., Kiel, WI; Midwest Builders, Fennimore, WI; Geisler
Bros., Dubuque, IA; and Northern Metal & Roofing Co., Inc., Madison, WI. Delta 3 will review
bidding information and will report back to the committee.
The committee discussed holding a meeting at a time when Scott from Delta 3 and a
representative from Focus on Energy could both attend, possibly March 22 or 24.
Motion by Bob Keeney, seconded by Vince Loeffelholz, to adjourn until April 2, 2010. Motion
carried.
