EDUCATION/FAIR COMMITTEE MEETING
Monday, June 17, 2013
9:00 a.m.
UWEX Conference Room
Lancaster, WI
The meeting was called to order by Chairman John Patcle. Present, in addition to Chairman
Patcle were Bob Keeney, Vince Loeffelholz, Pat Schroeder, Grant Loy, Roger Guthrie, Larry
Wolf, Bev Doll, Amy Olson, Laura Wackershauser, Linda Hahn, Jack Johnson, Rusty Childs and
Dan Klein. Roger left the meeting at 11:55 a.m.
The meeting notice was posted at the Administration Building, Extension Office and Youth &
Ag Center and radio station by Lori Vesperman.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Bob Keeney, to approve the amended agenda. Motion
carried.
Motion by Bob Keeney, seconded by Roger Guthrie, to approve the minutes of the meeting held
May 20, 2013. Motion carried.
Amy Olson gave the grounds and maintenance report.
Back boards in the Livestock Barn will not be painted for the time being.
Dave Fritz quit his LTE maintenance position Friday, June 14.
Motion by Bob Keeney, seconded by Vince Loeffelholz to approve Youth & Ag Center and
Fairgrounds vouchers. Motion carried.
Bev Doll presented Grant County Extension and Youth & Ag Center business.
Linda Hahn was present to request a reduced rate for Avery’s Race fund raiser using the Eckstein
Exhibit Hall July 18-21 with the event being held July 20. Last year Katy Pitzen gave a $150
donation. Linda also requested a reduced rate for the Cancer Coalition fund raiser to be held in
the Youth & Ag Center on September 21, 2013.
Motion by Vince Loeffelholz, seconded by Pat Schroeder to waive the fee for use of the Eckstein
Exhibit Hall for Avery’s Race fundraising event in July, 2013, but to pay any other expenses.
Any donations made will be accepted. Motion carried.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Grant Loy, to waive the fee for use of the Youth and Ag
Center for the Grant County Cancer Coalition fundraising event September 14, 2013, but pay any
other expenses. Motion carried.
Becky DeBuhr spoke with Lori requesting a reduced rate for the Alzheimers Walk fundraiser
event using the Youth & Ag Center September 13-14 with the event being held September 14.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Roger Guthrie to waive the fee for use of the Youth & Ag
Center for the Alzheimers fundraising event in September, 2013, but to pay any other expenses.
Motion carried.
Bev Doll shared results from the visioning session held June 13 regarding the 4-H Youth
Development Agent position.
Bev shared information regarding the UW Extension Financial Security Pathways Online
Conference. She summarized the advantages including cost savings in travel and motel costs.
The online conference also allowed more participation by community partners and organizations.
The committee asked for feedback on the Departments Heads’ opinion of the WIPFLi study. Bev
felt she and Ted as Department Heads did not have enough information to give an informative
opinion.
Motion by pat Schroeder, seconded by Grant Loy to approve Extension vouchers. Motion carried.
Amy Olson presented Fair and Fairgrounds business.
Amy Olson shared information that the West Grant Lions Club will no longer be helping with the
beer sales at the Grant County Fair.
Laura Wackershauser, Grant County Holstein Association, was present to discuss the Wisconsin
Holstein Champion Show being held on the Fairgrounds in July, 2013. She asked for building
rates to be reduced, permission to have a semi load of pine shavings delivered for the Open Show
Barn and inquired about the sound system.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Roger Guthrie to have Holstein Association pay utilities
and expenses and an additional $100 minimum over the cost of expenses. Motion carried.
Motion by Bob Keeney, seconded by Vince Loeffelholz to accept the donation of pine shavings
for the State Holstein Show. Motion carried.
Jack Johnson was present to discuss security at the Fair.
Motion by Grant Loy, seconded by Bob Keeney to pay $15 per hour for officers at the 2013
Grant County Fair. Motion carried.
A Grant County Deputy will provide security for concert performers.
Motion by Vince Loeffelholz, seconded by Pat Schroeder, to pay for Grant County Officer’s
concert performers security. Motion carried.
The wood carver cost will be $300 for one day and including the wood. The carver, Ladd
Ostendorf, will carve four items to donate to the fair for the silent auction. He will donate one
additional item to remain on the Fairgrounds. He requested to sell additional carved items at the
fair. Ladd will be here Friday, August 16 and Saturday, August 17.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Vince Loeffelholz to allow Ladd Ostendorf to sell items
the second day he is at the fair. Motion carried.
Amy gave an update on the Summer Festival.
Rusty Childs, Heritage Builders, shared a proposal totaling $7,400 to brace the hog barn.
Dan Klein, K & L Construction, discussed bracing the hog barn. Cost would be around $1,000.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Bob Keeney to have K & L Construction brace the hog
barn. Motion carried.
Motion by Vince Loeffelholz, seconded by Grant Loy to approve Fair and Fairgrounds vouchers.
Motion carried.
Amy was instructed to advertise for part-time maintenance help.
Set agenda for July 8, 2013, meeting.
Motion by Vince Loeffelholz, seconded by Grant Loy, to adjourn until July 8, 2013. Motion
carried.
