EDUCATION/FAIR COMMITTEE MEETING
Monday, April 21, 2014
9:00 a.m.
The meeting was called to order by County Board Chairman Bob Keeney. Present, in addition to
Keeney were John Patcle, Pat Schroeder, Grant Loy, Roger Guthrie, Mark Stead, Dan Timmerman,
Bev Doll, Amy Olson, Ted Bay, Sarah Hopkins, Becky DeBuhr, Bob Middendorf and Herb Cody.
The meeting notice was posted at the Administration Building, Extension Office, Youth & Ag Center
and media by Jenny Dixon.
Motion by Roger Guthrie, seconded by Grant Loy, to approve the amended agenda. Motion carried.
Reorganization of the committee with election of officers was held.
Pat Schroeder nominated John Patcle for chairman. Motion by Roger Guthrie, seconded by Mark
Stead to close nominations and cast a unanimous ballot for John Patcle as chair of the committee.
Motion carried.
Chairman Patcle presided over the rest of the meeting.
Roger Guthrie nominated Pat Schroeder for vice chair. Motion by Grant Loy, seconded by Mark
Stead to close nominations and cast a unanimous ballot for Pat Schroeder. Motion carried.
Roger Guthrie nominated Grant Loy for secretary. Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Mark Stead
to close nominations and cast a unanimous ballot for Grant Loy. Motion carried.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Roger Guthrie, to approve the minutes of the meetings held
March 17 & 24, 2014. Motion carried.
Amy Olson gave the grounds and maintenance report.
Amy will be attending the Public Property Committee meeting to discuss handicap accessible
restrooms in the Youth & Ag Center.
Maintenance employees are working on landscaping by the Youth and Ag Center.
Motion by Grant Loy, seconded by Roger Guthrie to approve Youth & Ag Center vouchers. Motion
carried.
Bev Doll presented Grant County Extension and Youth & Ag Center business.
Discussion was held on the cost of a wedding ceremony being held in the Youth & Ag Center.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Roger Guthrie to charge $200 for use of the Youth & Ag
Center for a wedding ceremony on January 3, 2015. Motion carried.
Becky DeBuhr, Outreach Specialist with Alzhemiers & Dementia Alliance, requested use of the
Crops Building for the Alzheimers Walk.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Grant Loy, to waive the fee for use of the Crops Building on
September 12 & 13, 2014 for the Alzheimers Walk. Motion carried.
Sarah Hopkins was present to share information on grant opportunities she will be presenting to the
County Board.
The grant first involves an event on August 2, 2014 that includes sewing, home environment and
nutrition workshops.
Motion by Grant Loy, seconded by Dan Timmerman to allow accounts to be set up for a $1,000.00
grant from the Wisconsin Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Foundation. Motion carried.
The second grant is the Teen Court Grant from Wisconsin Law Foundation for $1695.00. The last is
a potential grant available from the 2012 Alice in Dairyland Committee of which technology
equipment would be applied for.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Roger Guthrie to allow Sarah to submit grants to the full
County Board for approval. Motion carried.
Bev Doll shared information on the upcoming WACEC conference being held June 23 & 24 in Eau
Claire.
Motion by Roger Guthrie, seconded by Grant Loy, to approve Extension vouchers. Motion carried.
A $50 donation was received from the Deb Cummins Cancer Benefit for use of the Eckstein Exhibit
Hall.
BouMatic Dairy donated eight milking units including the vacuum pump and receiver panel to the
Livestock Facility. Argall Dairy Systems West will provide a new pipeline washer and the installation
of equipment at total cost not to exceed $5,000.00.
The Livestock Auction Trust will be donating a check for $5,000.00 to pay for the cost of the new
equipment and installation.
Amy Olson presented Fair and Fairgrounds business.
Amy followed up on the Spring District Meeting. It is the 100 th anniversary of 4-H. Amy would like
add an antique class relating to 4-H to the fairbook.
Motion by Roger Guthrie, seconded by Dan Timmerman, to add an antique class to the fairbook.
Motion carried.
There are 13 libraries interested in joining the Read-Win Program for the 2014 fair.
S & S Farms – Pat and Karen Schroeder and Family will sponsor the Read -Win Program.
Summer Festival was discussed. Classes for stock car racing are still being worked on.
Ted Bay presented the Friend of Extension Award to Bob Middendorf. The award recognized Bob for
his work in helping Extension reach farmers with the latest research and information farmers use in
decision making.
Herb Cody from WGLR was present to discuss Friday night entertainment at the 2014 fair. Herb
suggested having Bob Middendorf do the Farm Show live Friday night in the Wisconsin Bank and
Trust Entertainment Tent.
A & W of Lancaster will sponsor the all event wristbands that include $1.00 off any combo at A & W
from August 13-18, 2014.
James from Blue Boy Bakery will be donating jumbo sugar cookies and assist in decorating on
Sunday in the Scott Implement Kids Tent.
A contract was signed with the Larry Busch Band.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Grant Loy to accept the late Junior Fairest entry. Motion
carried.
The Fairest of the Fair banquet will be held May 29, 2014.
Rates were discussed for signs on the pole barns giving advertising rites that can be renewed to
businesses.
Amy will put an ad in the paper to promote purchasing pavers for the patio area at the Eckstein
Exhibit Hall.
Amy suggested purchasing a bench to put next to the one at the Eckstein Exhibit Hall. It can be used
for a memorial donation if chosen to do so.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Roger Guthrie to purchase a bench for the area by the Eckstein
Exhibit Hall. Motion carried.
Motion by Grant Loy, seconded by Dan Timmerman, to approve Fair and Fairgrounds vouchers.
Motion carried.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Roger Guthrie, to approve the livestock claim from Lancaster
Veterinary Clinic in the amount of $210 to be paid in full. Motion carried.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Dan Timmerman, to adjourn until May19, 2014. Motion carried.
