EDUCATION/FAIR COMMITTEE MEETING
Monday, July 21, 2014
9:00 a.m.
The meeting was called to order by Chairman John Patcle. Present, in addition to Patcle were Grant
Loy, Roger Guthrie, Mark Stead, Dan Timmerman, Bob Keeney, Bev Doll, Amy Olson, Lori
Vesperman and Ruth Ann Summers. Pat Schroeder informed Chairman Patcle he would be late,
arriving at 9:05 a.m.
The meeting notice was posted at the Administration Building, Extension Office, Youth & Ag
Center and media by Jenny Dixon.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Grant Loy, to approve the agenda. Motion carried.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Dan Timmerman, to approve the minutes of the meetings held
June 16, July 1 & 7, 2014, with one correction on July 7 minutes. Motion carried.
Amy Olson gave the grounds and maintenance report.
Amy attended the Public Property Committee meeting and the committee agreed the cost of
handicap accessible restrooms in the Youth and Agriculture Center should be covered by Public
Property.
Pat Schroeder received calls of appreciation from people who attended the SMA fundraiser in the
Eckstein Exhibit Hall for use of an air conditioned building for children who have the disease.
Amy received a blacktop quote of $9966 for the fairgrounds from Scott Pagenkopf of the Highway
Department. The cost will be covered by Fairgrounds Public Property request.
Motion by Roger Guthrie, seconded by Dan Timmerman to approve Youth & Ag Center vouchers.
Motion carried.
Bev Doll presented Grant County Extension and Youth & Ag Center business.
Follow-up discussion was held on the WACEC Conference.
The UW-Extension market retention plan was discussed.
Ruth Ann Summers, representing the Grant County Historical Society, was present to request the fee
be waived for use of the Auditorium on October 5, 2014, for a program and exhibits.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Roger Guthrie, to waive the fee for use of the Youth and Ag
Center for the Grant County Historical Society on October 5, 2014. Motion carried.
Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Pat Schroeder, to approve UW-Extension vouchers.
Motion carried.
The joint Ag & Extension Education Committee meeting with Lafayette County held on July 1was
reviewed. The next joint meeting will be held August 4, 1:30 p.m., at the Platteville Pioneer Farm.
Amy Olson presented Fair and Fairgrounds business.
Summer Festival was discussed.
Rain insurance for the 2014 Fair was discussed.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Dan Timmerman, to give Amy Olson and John Patcle
authority to make the decision on rain insurance and what company to purchase it from. Motion
carried.
Amy Olson will have the fair promoted on eight radio stations. She delivered sponsorship
appreciation baskets.
A contract was signed with Bloomington Fire Department for working the beer stand.
Amy shared an invitation from Queen B Radio for their Summer Celebration July 23.
The truck at the fairgrounds needs to be replaced. A truck from the Grant County Highway
Department is currently being used. Amy spoke with Steve Braun who informed her that vehicles he
can get are strictly for Emergency Management. Linda Gebhard said no county trucks are available
at this time.
Operations of the 2014 Fair was discussed.
Amy will contact Tim Slack to ask for 25-30 small square bales for the kids tent. Amy ordered
plaques for the three Outstanding Fair Persons.
Each board member was assigned buildings to monitor during the 2014 Fair. Roger Guthrie – Crops
and Eckstein, Pat Schroeder – Swine Barn, Grant Loy – Grandstand area, Mark Stead – Youth & Ag
Center and Kids Tent, Dan Timmerman – Grandstand Foodstand and Bob Keeney – Livestock
Facility and Dairy Barn. The evening closing schedule for committee members is as follows:
Wednesday – Dan Timmerman, Thursday – Mark Stead, Friday – Grant Loy, Saturday – Roger
Guthrie and Sunday – Pat Schroeder.
Bennetts will not be available the week of fair to donate ice. Amy is looking into other possibilities.
Pat will contact New Horizons manager to see if they would be interested in purchasing and holding
ice. Saturday night announcer and singer of the National Anthem were discussed. Amy will contact
Nelson Hardwood for three loads of saw dust. Hand sanitizer stations will be on the grounds,
meeting the Consumer Protection requirement. Carcass show locations were discussed. Workers for
the 50/50 raffle and bed racing were discussed.
Derek Orth requested to hold a penny war fundraiser during the entire fair for the Quiz Bowl. He can
purchase booth space to hold it if he wishes.
Signage on buildings giving businesses advertising rites that can be renewed was discussed.
Motion by Roger Guthrie, seconded by Pat Schroeder, to charge $750 for the Crops Building and
dairy barn for five years. Payment will be $500 the first year and $250 the second year. The charge
for the swine barn, open show barn and poultry and rabbit building will be $500 for five years of
advertising, with $250 being paid the first year and $250 second year. Businesses will purchase their
own signs that will be no larger than 4’ x 8’. Motion carried.
Woolwich Dairy requested advertising rites on the dairy barn.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Dan Timmerman, to approve Fair and Fairgrounds vouchers.
Motion carried.
Motion by Roger Guthrie, seconded by Dan Timmerman, to approve sending the livestock claim
from Lancaster Veterinary Clinic in the amount of $323.90 to be paid in full on to the full county
board. Motion carried.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Dan Timmerman, to adjourn until July 31, 2014. Motion
carried.
