EDUCATION/FAIR COMMITTEE MEETING
Thursday, July 31, 2014
9:00 a.m.
The meeting was called to order by Chairman John Patcle. Present, in addition to Patcle were Grant
Loy, Pat Schroeder, Roger Guthrie, Mark Stead, Dan Timmerman, Bob Keeney, Bev Doll, Ted Bay,
Amy Olson, Lori Vesperman and Sarah Hopkins.
The meeting notice was posted at the Administration Building, Extension Office, Youth & Ag
Center and media by Jenny Dixon.
Motion by Roger Guthrie, seconded by Pat Schroeder, to approve the agenda. Motion carried.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Dan Timmerman, to approve the minutes of the meeting held
July 21, 2014. Motion carried.
Amy Olson gave the grounds and maintenance report.
Amy presented 2015 Public Property requests for the Youth & Ag Center.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Grant Loy to send the request for a handicap restroom in the
Youth & Ag Center ($46958) on to the Public Property Committee. Motion carried.
Grant County Jail inmates will set up and take down snow fence for the fair.
Bev Doll presented Grant County Extension and Youth & Ag Center business.
Cost savings from time spans of past open agent positions and Lafayette County funds will be used
to cover the 2015 budget increase for the UW-Extension Office.
Discussion was held on the Grant and Lafayette Counties agriculture agents agreement. The next
joint Ag & Extension Education Committee meeting with Lafayette County will be August 4,
1:30 p.m., at the Platteville Pioneer Farm.
Public Property items were discussed and will be presented at the next meeting.
Amy Olson presented Fair and Fairgrounds business.
Everything is signed and ready for the rain insurance through Premier. Time frame is 3:00-9:00 p.m.
with .25 inch of rain at a cost of $1272.
Ads for WGLR were taped. Amy also put a daily ad in the Telegraph Herald.
New Horizons will provide the ice for the fair.
Milestone will donate gravel for the east fairgrounds parking area roads for sponsorship.
County will pick up sawdust from Prairie du Chien.
Swiss Valley returned all their sponsorship tickets including all-event tickets and mega ride passes.
Pat will give the tickets to WGLR for give-aways.
A contract was signed with Blake’s Prairie Fair for working the beer stand.
Public Property items were discussed and will be presented at the next meeting.
Roger will check on the availability of trucks for the fairgrounds.
Operations of the 2014 Fair was discussed.
Bell Aire will start setting tents up on Tuesday of the fair. Diggers will come Tuesday to do
markings.
Total exhibitors and entries are up for the 2015 fair.
Martin Shelliam’s entries will be late due to extenuating circumstances.
Motion by Grant Loy, seconded by Roger Guthrie to allow Martin Shelliam to show swine at the
fair. Motion carried. One no vote.
The wood carver would like to return to this year’s fair. He will leave four wood carvings that will
be sold at a silent auction.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Dan Timmerman, to have the wood carver again at the 2014
fair. Motion carried.
Discussion was held on adding homemade potato chips to the grandstand foodstand. It was decided
to wait and try them another year.
Grandstand events were discussed.
Amy informed the committee the 2015 Wisconsin Association of Fairs Convention will be held
January 4-8, 2015, at the Chula Vista in Wisconsin Dells.
The next scheduled meeting will be August 14 with the call of the chair on August 11, 12 and 13.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Dan Timmerman, to adjourn until 14, 2014. Motion carried.
