EDUCATION/FAIR COMMITTEE MEETING
Monday, August 17, 2015
9:00 a.m.
The meeting was called to order by Committee Chairman John Patcle. Present, in addition to Patcle were
Grant Loy, Pat Schroeder, Roger Guthrie, Mark Stead, Dan Timmerman, Bob Keeney, Bev Doll, Ted
Bay, Amy Olson, Lori Vesperman, Shannon Brown, Kory Stalsberg, Sarah Hopkins and Alicia Adams.
The meeting notice was posted at the Administration Building, Extension Office, Youth & Ag Center
and media by Jenny Dixon.
Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Mark Stead, to approve the agenda. Motion carried.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Roger Guthrie, to approve the minutes of meetings held
July 13, 20 and August 5, 2015. Motion carried.
Bev Doll presented Grant County UW-Extension and Youth & Ag Center business.
Kory Stalsberg gave an overview of current and completed projects along with Professional Development
opportunities. He has visited surrounding county’s agents.
Shannon Brown reported he is getting integrated into the area and has been to most areas in the county.
He shared information on applying for a 75%/25% Clean Sweep grant. The County would be responsible
for 25%. The application deadline has been extended until October 2, 2015.
Bev gave an update on the vacant WNEP position.
Bev presented the UW-Extension budget for 2016.
Motion by Roger Guthrie, seconded by Grant Loy, to approve the 2016 UW-Extension budget with a
4.91% decrease in county funding from 2015. Motion carried.
Discussion was held on an Economic, Tourism and Resource Committee budget item intended to fund a
new staff position that would cover county administrative duties of tourism related programs.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Dan Timmerman, to approve UW-Extension vouchers. Motion
carried.
Amy Olson gave the grounds and maintenance & Youth & Ag Center report.
The dairy barn water line was extended by the maintenance staff.
Baus Electric completed additional lighting on the announcer tower.
Amy presented the Youth & Ag Center budget for 2016.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Mark Stead, to approve the proposed 2016 Youth & Ag Center
budget. Motion carried.
Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Grant Loy, to approve grounds and maintenance vouchers.
Motion carried.
Amy Olson presented Fair and Fairgrounds business.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Mark Stead, to have livestock haulers sign an agreement and load
out schedule. Motion carried.
Alicia Adams and Kory Stalsberg were present to discuss how hot weather can affect the welfare of pigs
going through the sale ring during the Junior Fair Livestock Auction. A contingency plan was put in to
place with the exhibitors appearing to sell their animal, but the animal not brought to the ring. The
determination of weather will follow the Livestock Weather Safety Index.
Motion by Roger Guthrie, seconded by Pat Schroder, to have the D airy & Livestock Agent and Swine
Superintendents make a call at 11:00 a.m. the day of the Junior Fair Livestock Auction whether the swin e
go through the sale ring. Motion carried.
Sarah will speak with the family of two exhibitors that did not turn in Junior Fair Livestock Auction
Consignment Sheets this year and also in 2013.
Storm damage repairs were completed and turned into insurance.
Amy discussed attending the International Association of Fairs and Expos Convention (IAFE).
Motion by Roger Guthrie, seconded Pat Schroeder, to have Amy attend the IAFE Convention. Motion
carried.
Amy presented the Fairgrounds budget for 2016.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Dan Timmerman, to approve the proposed 2016 Fairgrounds
budget. Motion carried.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Mark Stead, to approve 2016 Public Property requests for the
Fairgrounds in the amount of $11,413.00 (paint - $500, road care - $5,000, lawn mower - $5,685,
entrance rugs for the Eckstein Exhibit Hall - $228). Motion carried.
Event details for the 2015 Fair were discussed.
Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Pat Schroeder, to approve Fair and Fairgrounds vouchers. One
no vote. Motion carried.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Dan Timmerman, to approve sending the livestock claim from
Lancaster Veterinary Clinic in the amount of $210.00 on to the full county board. Motion carried.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Mark Stead, to adjourn. Motion carried.
The next meeting will be held August 20, 2015.
