EDUCATION/FAIR COMMITTEE MEETING
Monday, June 15, 2015
1:00 p.m.
The meeting was called to order by Chairman John Patcle. Present, in addition to Patcle were Grant
Loy, Pat Schroeder, Roger Guthrie, Mark Stead, Dan Timmerman, Bob Keeney, Bev Doll, Amy
Olson, Lori Vesperman, Kory Stalsberg, Sarah Hopkins, Herb Cody, Steven & Janet Riley.
The meeting notice was posted at the Administration Building, Extension Office, Youth & Ag
Center and media by Jenny Dixon.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Grant Loy, to approve the amended agenda. Motion carried.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Roger Guthrie, to approve the minutes of meeting held May 18,
2015. Motion carried.
Bev Doll presented Grant County UW-Extension and Youth & Ag Center business.
Kory Stalsberg was present for an introduction and to give a summary of his first two weeks and his
near future plans.
The WNEP position opening was extended until the end of June.
Bev shared a brochure on the Land Lease Forum for Ted Bay.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Roger Guthrie, to approve UW-Extension vouchers. Motion
carried.
Amy Olson gave the grounds and maintenance report.
Gary Simmons is a limited term employee for the summer working three days a week and during the
fair.
Amy had concerns water was not draining properly from the grounds. The city flushed the sewer
lines and found cement chunks either from the previously repaired manhole or another manhole.
Amy will contact Wepkings for a camera.
Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Grant Loy, to approve grounds and maintenance vouchers.
Motion carried.
Amy Olson presented Fair and Fairgrounds business.
Kory Stalsberg reviewed poultry restrictions and requirements for the 2015 Grant County Fair.
Herb Cody, WGLR, was present to discuss working together for the 2015 Fair and asked for any
suggestions. Grant Loy questioned advertising for the race being held June 27 by Lafayette County
Speedway at the Grant County Fairgrounds. Lafayette County Speedway is responsible for
advertising the event.
Steven and Janet Riley were present to discuss the WISWIT campers using the fairgrounds and their
concern regarding electricity.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Mark Stead, to invest up to $3,000 for wiring for 30 campers
on the fairgrounds and to make sure it is able to be used in the future. Funds should come out of fair
operations. Motion carried.
Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Grant Loy, to approve Fair and Fairgrounds vouchers.
Motion carried.
Bob and Amy met with West Grant Saddle Club to discuss getting water to the arena. Bob spoke
with Al Wepking about recommendations. West Grant Saddle Club plans to talk to Livestock Trust
regarding expenses. Roger Guthrie will donate two hydrants for the project if they can be used.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Dan Timmerman, to give permission to West Grant Saddle
Club to get water to the arena if the Livestock Trust agrees to pay for expenses. Motion carried.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Dan Timmerman, to see if the Livestock Trust would be
interested in putting in12 camp sites in the back of the livestock facility. Motion carried.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Mark Stead, to upgrade the sound system at the announcer’s
stand and the grandstand with funds coming from fair operations. Motion carried.
Boy Scouts will no longer be doing grandstand cleanup. The Lancaster Sluggers will do clean up
and will be paid $125.
A meeting will be held Monday, July 13, with the food stand and beer stand organizations.
Thursday night donkey races will start at 6:30 p.m. There will be 50 donkeys with 10 teams of 5.
Sarah Hopkins shared there was a third grade 4-H member who wanted to show a goat wether at the
fair but did not bring it along with others to the ID on May 3. The goat is a dairy breed, and
therefore, the father thought it did not need to be identified. However, because it is a market animal
it did need to be identified. The animal will not be sold. Sarah recommended the member be
allowed to show.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Roger Guthrie, to go with Sarah Hopkins’ recommendation and
allow the third grade 4-H member to show their goat wether at the fair. Motion carried.
The signs, posters and banners for the fair are ready to be distributed.
Contracts were signed for organizations working the beer stand at the grandstand – Knights of
Columbus, Lancaster Sluggers and Bloomington Fire Department.
Music contracts were signed for 2nd Generation, Boys Night Out, Mr. Obvious, Mojo Busted and
Erin Gleason.
Discussion was held on the digital sign policy at the fairgrounds. The sign is designated as an on
premise sign, meaning only events held on the premises can be displayed on the sign.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Dan Timmerman, to display events that have a building fee
of $150 or more and leave to the discretion of support staff. Motion carried.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Mark Stead, to adjourn. Motion carried.
A fair meeting will be held Monday, July 13, beginning at 5:00 p.m. The next scheduled meeting
will be held July 20, 2015.
