HomeMy WebLinkAboutAg & Ext Minutes February 15 2016 AGRICULTURE AND EXTENSION EDUCATION/FAIR COMMITTEE MEETING Monday, February 15, 2016 9:00 a.m. The meeting was called to order by Committee Chairman John Patcle. Present, in addition to Patcle were Pat Schroeder, Grant Loy, Roger Guthrie, Mark Stead, Dan Timmerman, Bob Keeney, Bev Doll, Amy Olson, Lori Vesperman, Ted Bay, Shannon Brown and Kory Stalsberg. The meeting notice was posted at the Administration Building, Extension Office, Youth & Ag Center and media by Jenny Dixon. Motion by Roger Guthrie, seconded by Mark Stead, to approve the amended agenda. Motion carried. Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Roger Guthrie, to approve the minutes of meeting held January 25, 2016. Motion carried. Bev Doll presented Grant County UW-Extension and Youth & Ag Center business. Shannon Brown, Kory Stalsberg, Ted Bay and Bev Doll gave agent reports, and Bev shared Donna Peterson’s report with the committee. A discussion was held on hosting Farm Progress Days. The committee and agents are interested, but not at this time. Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Grant Loy, to approve UW-Extension vouchers. Motion carried. Amy Olson gave the grounds and maintenance & Youth & Ag Center report. Amy met with the Livestock Trust. They will cover the cost of four doors on the south side of the Livestock Facility totaling $11,657.00, but not $4,432.00 for repairs on remaining doors. Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Mark Stead to pay $4,432 for repairs on remaining doors in the Livestock Facility. Motion carried. The 4-H State Dog Show is being hosted by Iowa County and held in Grant County in July of 2016. Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Roger Guthrie, to charge for the cost of utilities for the 2016 4-H State Dog Show. Motion carried. Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Roger Guthrie, to approve grounds and maintenance vouchers. Motion carried. Amy Olson presented Fair and Fairgrounds business. Events for the 2016 Fair were discussed. Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Roger Guthrie to add a Pro Farm class to the truck/tractor pull Saturday night of the fair. Motion carried. Contracts were signed with the Larry Busch Band, ATV/Garden Pull and the Lafayette County Speedway for the summer race and the Fair race. The 2016 Southwest Regional High School Rodeo will be held on the fairgrounds August 26, 27 & 28. Events will be held in the Saddle Club arena and all campers and trailers will be parked in the adjoining area. The Crops Building showers will be used. It will be suggested the Rodeo make a donation to the fairgrounds. Wedding receptions are scheduled in both the Youth & Agriculture Center and Eckstein Exhibit Hall. Motion by Roger Guthrie, seconded by Pat Schroeder, to have the Rodeo participants use the Crops Building showers before 10:00 a.m. Saturday and then not until Sunday morning. Motion carried. The Fairest of the Fair Banquet will be held May 3. The IAFE Zone 4 Conference will be held in Green Bay on April 4-6. A scholarship that covers the cost of the hotel and registration for one attendee will be applied for. Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Dan Timmerman, to have Amy Olson attend the 2016 IAFE Zone 4 Conference. Motion carried. Amy is interested in attending a Skillpath seminar for women. Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded Pat Schroeder, to have Amy attend The Women’s Conference by Skillpath with the fair covering the cost. Motion carried. Amy would like to change the 2016 Fair theme to Blast from the Past, relating to the 60’s, to coincide with Calkins Midway plans celebrating their 50th Anniversary. Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Grant Loy, to change the 2016 Fair theme, upon recommendation of the Fair Manager, to Blast from the Past. Motion carried. Motion by Roger Guthrie, seconded by Dan Timmerman, to approve Fair and Fairgrounds vouchers. Motion carried. Public Comment: The cost of the electrical work in the Eckstein Exhibit Hall will be covered under the Eckstein Exhibit Hall account fund. Gary DiVall would like to donate a $1,000 memorial from his mother. Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Dan Timmerman, to accept a donation from the DiVall family to use for a picnic table and outdoor furnishings. The balance will be covered under the Eckstein Exhibit Hall account fund. Motion carried. Gary Wetter and Mike Bloom would like to make improvements to the rabbit/poultry building. These improvements include getting 150 rabbit cages, painting, and changing the doors to slide, in order to allow more room in the building. They estimate the cost will be approximately $7,000. The Livestock Trust gave $4,000 and they want to fundraise for the remaining amount. The art club from the Lancaster High School is interested in using the fairgrounds for a paintball fundraiser. They will be allowed to use the fairgrounds if they follow guidelines. Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Pat Schroeder, to adjourn. Motion carried.
