EDUCATION/FAIR COMMITTEE MEETING
Monday, March 21, 2016
9:00 a.m.
The meeting was called to order by Committee Chairman John Patcle. Present, in addition to
Patcle were Pat Schroeder, Grant Loy, Roger Guthrie, Mark Stead, Dan Timmerman, Bev Doll,
Amy Olson, Lori Vesperman, Kory Stalsberg, Donna Peterson, Cindy Busch, Jim Ley, Lyle
Baker and Dena Gleason. Bob Keeney arrived at 9:35.
The meeting notice was posted at the Administration Building, Extension Office, Youth & Ag
Center and media by Jenny Dixon.
Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Mark Stead, to approve the second amended agenda.
Motion carried.
Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Mark Stead, to approve the minutes of the meeting
held January 22, 2016. Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Grant Loy, to approve the
minutes of the meeting held February 15, 2016. Motion carried.
Bev Doll presented Grant County UW-Extension and Youth & Ag Center business.
Kory Stalsberg, Donna Peterson, Cindy Busch and Bev Doll gave agent reports, and Bev handed
out Shannon Brown’s report to the committee.
Motion by Grant Loy, seconded by Roger Guthrie, to accept and sign the WNEP agreement.
Motion carried.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Roger Guthrie to award the Farm Progress Days
Scholarship to Nathan Jensen. Motion carried.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Dan Timmerman, to approve UW-Extension vouchers.
Motion carried.
Amy Olson gave the grounds and maintenance & Youth & Ag Center report.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Dan Timmerman, to approve grounds and maintenance
vouchers. Motion carried.
Amy Olson presented Fair and Fairgrounds business.
Jim Ley and Lyle Baker from the Grant Antique Tractor Club presented the Committee with a
check for $250 and thanked them for space for their display at the Grant County Fair.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Dan Timmerman to move to closed session per state statute
19.85 (1) (c) considering employment, promotion, compensation or performance evaluation data
of any public employee over which the governmental body has jurisdiction or exercises
responsibility as it relates to the performance evaluation of the Fair Manager. Roll call vote
unanimous. Motion carried.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Dan Timmerman, to return to open session. Motion carried.
Events for the 2016 Fair were discussed.
A meet and greet with the bull riders will be sponsored by Doolittles Pub and Eatery.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Mark Stead to keep trucks as part of the local tractor pull
on Saturday night. Motion carried.
The committee agreed pit pass cost will stay the same.
Foosball rules were discussed.
Nate Dreckman suggested a faith-based band for entertainment Thursday night of the Fair.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Dan Timmerman, to have faith-based bands in the
Entertainment Tent Thursday night of the Fair. Motion carried.
Amy informed the committee that Jake Klas, John Reding and Tyler Staskal chose not to return
as swine superintendents.
Livestock arrival times were discussed. Swine is the only additional species to arrive on the
grounds on Wednesday.
Amy and UW-Extension Office staff will be meeting with Debbie from WLIC to discuss RFID
tags and programs.
Amy would like to have an EMS, fire fighter day Sunday of the 2016 Fair.
The Wartburg College band would like to use the Eckstein Exhibit Hall on April 20-21, 2016,
staying overnight. There will be two directors with the group and they have insurance.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Pat Schroeder to allow the Wartburg College band
participants stay in the Eckstein Exhibit Hall and waive the fee. Motion carried.
Fairbook changes in the Cloverbud department that were previously passed by the committee
need to be rescinded due to the fact that Cloverbuds cannot be competitively judged according to
4-H guidelines.
Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Roger Guthrie to the rescind previous motion that
allowed Cloverbuds to enter the Clothing Revue. Motion carried.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Dan Timmerman to sign a contract withViper Mechanical
Sled Rental for the sled for the Saturday night open tractor and truck pull. Motion carried.
Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Grant Loy, to sign the contract with Wundo Band for
Friday night from 8:00-midnight. Motion carried.
The Spring District Show will be hosted by Crawford County and held in Gays Mills on April 13.
West Grant Saddle Club would like to put a 6-8’ gate between the arena and back pit to allow
easier access when camping in the pit area.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Roger Guthrie to allow the West Grant Saddle Club to put
a gate in between the arena and back pit at their own expense. Motion carried.
Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Mark Stead, to approve Fair and Fairgrounds vouchers.
Motion carried.
Livestock claims were discussed.
Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Grant Loy, to pay the Lancaster Veterinary Clinic
livestock claim submitted, paying seven days boarding fees totaling $140 each, pending the new
law, and sending on to the full County Board. Motion carried.
Public comment:
The state aid check was received by the fair.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Pat Schroeder, to adjourn. Motion carried.
Adjourned at 11:45 a.m.
The next meeting is scheduled to be held April 18, 2016.
