EDUCATION/FAIR COMMITTEE MEETING
Monday, August 7, 2017
9:00 a.m.
The meeting was called to order by Committee Chairman Roger Guthrie. Present, in addition to Guthrie
were John Patcle, Mark Stead, Grant Loy, Dan Timmerman, Mike Lieurance, Bob Keeney, Amy Olson,
Bev Doll, Ted Bay, Lori Vesperman, Paul Ohlrogge, Kory Stalsberg, James Schneider, Charisse Orth,
Donna Peterson, Pat Klug and Tony and Caroline Timmerman.
The meeting notice was posted at the UW-Extension Office, Youth & Agriculture Center and mailed to
media and Administration Building by Lori Vesperman and posted on the website by the Grant County
Clerk’s Office.
Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Mark Stead, to approve the agenda. Motion carried.
Motion by Mike Lieurance, seconded by Grant Loy, to approve minutes of the meeting held July 17, 2017.
Motion carried.
Grant County UW-Extension and Youth & Agriculture Center business was presented.
Bev Doll is working on the UW-Extension budget for 2018.
Bev presented 2018 Public Property requests for the UW-Extension Office.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Mike Lieurance, to send the request for a laptop with docking station
($1200) on to IT. Motion carried.
Agent reports were given by Donna Peterson, James Schneider, Ted Bay and Kory Stalsberg.
Discussion was held on Lafayette County’s interest in hiring their own Agriculture Agent.
Paul Ohlrogge gave an update on the nEXT Generation.
Motion by Grant Loy, seconded by Mike Lieurance, to approve UW-Extension vouchers. Motion carried.
Amy Olson gave the grounds and maintenance and Youth & Agriculture Center report.
Sprague Brothers Tree Service did tree trimming on the grounds. The buildings are closed for fair setup.
Inmates from the Grant County Jail are helping with fencing. A race track light was replaced at a cost of
$1,050 from Crescent Electric. One crossbar was fixed with help from Alliant Energy. Wiring in the crows
nest was repaired.
Amy presented Public Property requests. She is requesting projection screens for the North and South
Rooms in the Youth & Agriculture Center at a cost of $500 each for a total cost of $1,000. She is also
requesting a scrubber to be used in buildings on the Fairgrounds, splitting the cost between Fairgrounds
and Youth & Agriculture Center. The portion of the cost for the Youth & Agriculture Center is $1,816.27.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Mike Lieurance, to send the Youth & Agriculture Public Property
requests totaling $2,816.27 on to Public Property. Motion carried.
Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by John Patcle, to approve grounds and maintenance vouchers.
Motion carried.
Amy Olson presented Fair and Fairgrounds business.
Final fair details were discussed.
Pat Klug showed the committee a plaque the Livestock Trust had made in memory of Calvin Knapp and
Mary Brandemuehl.
Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Mark Stead, to allow the Livestock Trust to hang the plaque in
memory of Calvin Knapp and Mary Brandemuehl in a case by the door to the kitchen in the Livestock
Facility. Motion carried.
Tony and Caroline Timmerman were present to request allowance for late fair entries (beef) for their
children. They explained the reasons the entries were not turned in were due to their own circumstances,
not fault of the children.
Motion by Roger Guthrie, seconded by Mark Stead, to stand by the rules of the July 31 fair entry deadline,
not allowing late entries. Motion carried.
Amy Olson presented Public Property requests for the Fair/Fairgrounds requesting a portion of a floor
scrubber for use in buildings on the Fairgrounds ($1,816.27) and road care ($5,000.)
Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Mark Stead, to approve Fair Public Property requests of $1,816.27 for
a portion of the scrubber and $5,000 for road care. Motion carried.
Discussion was held on the swine barn.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Grant Loy, to have Amy make a request to Carson Wackershauser for
$25,000 from the Livestock Auction Committee to go toward building a new swine barn. Motion carried.
Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Mark Stead, to approve Fair and Fairgrounds vouchers. Motion
carried.
Motion by Mike Lieurance, seconded by Roger Guthrie, to approve the livestock claim in the amount of
$405 and send on to the full county board. Motion carried.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Grant Loy, to adjourn until the call of the chair. Motion carried.
The next scheduled meeting is August 29, 2017, at 9:00 a.m.
