EDUCATION/FAIR COMMITTEE MEETING
Monday, June 19, 2017
9:00 a.m.
The meeting was called to order by Committee Chairman Roger Guthrie. Present, in addition to
Guthrie were John Patcle, Mark Stead, Grant Loy, Dan Timmerman, Mike Lieurance, Bob
Keeney, Amy Olson, Bev Doll, Lori Vesperman, James Schneider, Charisse Orth, Donna
Peterson and Ted Bay.
The meeting notice was posted at the UW-Extension Office, Youth & Agriculture Center and
mailed to media and Administration Building by Lori Vesperman and posted on the website by
the Grant County Clerk’s Office.
Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Mark Stead, to approve the agenda. Matt Hanson will call in
at 9:45. Motion carried.
Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Grant Loy, to approve minutes of the meeting held
May 15, 2017. Motion carried.
Grant County UW-Extension and Youth & Agriculture Center business was presented.
Larry Wagner contacted the UW-Extension Office requesting the fee be waived for the Lancaster
Firemen’s Dance.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Mike Lieurance, to allow the Lancaster Fire Department use
of the Eckstein Exhibit Hall for their Firemen’s Dance on August 26, 2017 with no fee. Motion
carried.
Agent reports were given by James Schneider, Donna Peterson, Charisse Orth, Bev Doll, and Ted
Bay. Kory Stalsberg’s report was handed out to the committee.
James is monitoring changes made in the County Conservation Aids program and will update the
committee on any final decisions and will share information with the County Clerk and Highway
Department.
Motion by Mike Lieurance, seconded by Roger Guthrie, to waive the fee for the Master Gardener
Plant Sale held in the Crops Building on May 13. Motion carried.
Ted Bay presented information from Lifeline on a projector and portable loudspeaker.
Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by John Patcle, to allow the purchase of office equipment,
a projector and portable speakers with wireless mics, to be paid for from PAT funds. Motion
carried.
The meeting with Lafayette County Agriculture & Extension Committee on the Memorandum of
Understanding for sharing agriculture agents will be held at the UW Platteville Pioneer Farm on
August 21 at 1:00 p.m.
A video conference was held with Matt Hanson on the nEXT Generation update.
Motion by Grant Loy, seconded by Mike Lieurance, to approve UW-Extension vouchers. Motion
carried.
Amy Olson gave the grounds and maintenance and Youth & Agriculture Center report.
Cement work was completed in front of the Youth & Agriculture Center. Amy will be contacting
M & M Concrete with questions regarding a split in the pavement.
The gear box on the brush hog needs to be replaced. Ritchie Implement estimated the cost to be
$1,500.
Jaycees put a new roof on their building.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by John Patcle, to approve grounds and maintenance vouchers.
Motion carried.
Amy Olson presented Fair and Fairgrounds business.
Kathy Schramm was present to give a report/update on the Little Britches Rodeo held on the
Fairgrounds June 2-4, 2017. She questioned if there were any clean up or other costs. Amy Olson
suggested that they cover the cost of electricity, water and garbage. Amy will provide an invoice.
Fair details were discussed.
The presentation of local law enforcement vehicles was well received last year. Amy will check
with Nate Dreckman to see if it would work to do it this year at the start of Wednesday night’s
grandstand event.
Sunday will be Veterans Day at the fair. Colors will held before the noon Demo Derby.
All brochures and posters are ready to be distributed.
Entrance for holders of all event passes was discussed.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Mike Lieurance, to allow 12 and under in free into the
grandstand Sunday night. Motion carried.
The superintendents meeting will be held August 3 at 6:30 p.m.
Organizations running the food and beer stands have been confirmed and will also meet
August 3.
Amy, Kory, Roger and John toured the swine barn at the fairgrounds in Lodi.
The Grant County Fairgrounds was awarded a $2,500 grant from Badgerland Financial for the
purchase two sets of bleachers for the swine barn. The grant will not cover the full cost.
Motion by Mike Lieurance, seconded by Dan Timmerman, to pay for the balance of two sets of
bleachers using money from the livestock barn account. Motion carried.
Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Grant Loy, to sign contracts for the following: Beer
Stand - Lancaster Wrestling Club, Knights of Columbus, Bloomington Fire Department; Food
Stand - Bloomington Sportsman Club; Bands: Whisky River Band and Mr. Obvious. Motion
carried.
Motion by Mike Lieurance, seconded by Dan Timmerman, to approve Fair and Fairgrounds
vouchers. Motion carried.
Roger will check with Southwest Veterinary to see if they are interested in handling stray dogs
picked up in Grant County.
Motion by Mike Lieurance, seconded by John Patcle, to pass livestock claims in the amount of
$270 onto the full County Board. Yes votes - 4, no votes -2. Motion carried.
Amy will order new fair shirts for the committee members who need them.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Dan Timmerman, to adjourn. Motion carried.
The next meeting is scheduled for July 17 at 9:00 a.m.
The August meeting will be held Tuesday, August 29, at 9:00 a.m.
