EDUCATION/FAIR COMMITTEE MEETING
Monday, September 18, 2017
9:00 a.m.
The meeting was called to order by Committee Chairman Roger Guthrie. Present, in addition to
Guthrie were John Patcle, Grant Loy, Mike Lieurance, Bob Keeney, Amy Olson, Lori
Vesperman, Bev Doll, Paul Ohlrogge, Kory Stalsberg, James Schneider, Charisse Orth, Donna
Peterson, Ted Bay, Joe Krantz and Keith Dalsing. Mark Stead and Dan Timmerman were
excused from the meeting.
The meeting notice was posted at the UW-Extension Office, Youth & Agriculture Center and
mailed to media and Administration Building by Lori Vesperman and posted on the website by
the Grant County Clerkâs Office.
Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Grant Loy, to approve the agenda. Motion carried.
Motion by Mike Lieurance, seconded by Grant Loy, to approve minutes of the meeting held
August 29, 2017. Motion carried.
Grant County UW-Extension and Youth & Agriculture Center business was presented.
Agent reports were given by Ted Bay, James Schneider, Kory Stalsberg, Donna Peterson,
Charrise Orth and Bev Doll.
Motion by Mike Lieurance, seconded by John Patcle, to authorize James Schneider to submit the
DNR County Conservation Aids Resolution for 2017-2018 to the County Board when it becomes
available. Motion carried.
Paul gave an update on the nEXT Generation. Other topics covered included: 4-H Interim time
off due to maternity leave and back filling the position, developing a memorandum of
understanding with Lafayette County regarding agriculture agents, timeline of posting for a
Lafayette County agriculture agent due to the retirement of the Grant/Lafayette County
Agriculture agent retirement in November, future status of current Interim Agents.
Motion by Grant Loy, seconded by Mike Lieurance, to approve UW-Extension vouchers. Motion
carried.
Amy Olson gave the grounds and maintenance and Youth & Agriculture Center report.
Kirt Timlin, Instant Shade Nursery & Jantzen Construction sponsor, donated the stage used
during the fair to the Fairgrounds. The old stage will be advertised for sale.
Amy received a concern regarding possible stray voltage in the rodeo horse arena area. It was
investigated and no problem found.
Motion by Grant Loy, seconded by John Patcle, to approve grounds and maintenance vouchers.
Motion carried.
Amy Olson presented Fair and Fairgrounds business.
The committee recapped the 2017 Fair and made suggestions for the 2018 Fair.
Discussion was held with Joe Krantz, Hard Hit Promotions, regarding shows for the 2018 Grant
County Fair.
Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Grant Loy, to sign a one-year contract with Hard Hit
Promotions for $10,500 plus Platinum sponsorship for the 2018 Fair. The Demo Derby will start
at 11:00 a.m. and the Night of Destruction at 5:00 p.m. Motion carried.
Keith Dalsing, KD Engineering Consultants, was present to discuss plans for a new swine barn.
A meeting has been set for Monday, October 2, 2:00 p.m., for Amy, Kory, John and Roger to
meet with Keith to move forward with planning.
Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Mike Lieurance, to sign a three-year contract with Calkins
United Shows. Motion carried.
Amy shared a list of comments and suggestions from the 2017 Fair.
Amy gave an update on internet service at the Fairgrounds.
The District Meeting will be held in Monroe County on October 12.
The Wisconsin Association of Fairs Convention will be held January 7-10, 2018. The Fairest of
the Fair will not be able to attend due to a career/future opportunity.
Motion by Grant Loy, seconded by Mike Lieurance, to approve the livestock claim in the amount
of $270 to the Grant County Humane Society and send on to the full county board. Motion
carried.
Motion by Mike Lieurance, seconded by John Patcle, to approve Fair and Fairgrounds vouchers.
Motion carried.
Discussion was held on the size of the Ag & Extension/Fair Committee.
Motion by Grant Loy, seconded by Mike Lieurance, to adjourn. Motion carried.
Adjourned at 12:05 p.m.
The next meeting is scheduled for October 16, 2017, at 9:00 a.m.
