HomeMy WebLinkAboutAg & Ext Minutes December 19 2016AGRICULTURE AND EXTENSION EDUCATION/FAIR COMMITTEE MEETING Monday, December 19, 2016 9:00 a.m. The meeting was called to order by Committee Chairman Roger Guthrie. Present, in addition to Guthrie were John Patcle, Mark Stead, Grant Loy, Dan Timmerman, Mike Lieurance, Bob Keeney, Bev Doll, Amy Olson, Lori Vesperman, Ted Bay, Carrie Busse, Charisse Orth and James Schneider. The meeting notice was posted at the UW-Extension Office, Youth & Agriculture Center and mailed to media and Administration Building by Jenny Dixon and posted on the website by the Grant County Clerk’s Office. Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Grant Loy, to approve the agenda. Motion carried. Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Mike Lieurance, to approve minutes of the meetings held November 14, 27, and 23, 2016. Motion carried. Bev Doll presented Grant County UW-Extension and Youth & Agriculture Center business. Ted Bay, Bev Doll, Carrie Busse, Charisse Orth, James Schneider and Donna Peterson gave agent reports. Ted Bay reported that a Clean Sweep will be held in September of 2017 with Lafayette and Iowa Counties. A grant in the amount of $25,830 was received to use for the Clean Sweep program. Ted also reported on a Brownfield Coalition grant application by Southwestern Regional Planning to evaluate high zinc levels in Grant County. If funded, the grant applicants will be asking his support in providing educational information for the public on zinc levels in Grant County soils. The application deadline for the 2017A Tourism Gr ants will be 4:30 p.m. on Friday, February 10. Applications must be received in the UW-Extension Office by this time. Motion by Grant Loy, seconded by Mike Lieurance to approve UW-Extension vouchers. Motion carried. Amy Olson gave the grounds and maintenance and Youth & Agriculture Center report. The Youth & Agriculture Center was closed the week of December 19-22 to wax floors. The Lancaster Middle School wrestling program has provided proof of insurance and will be signing a lease for use of the Youth & Agriculture Center for wrestling practice. Amy and the maintenance staff will check into making sound boards for the Eckstein Exhibit Hall. Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Grant Loy, to approve grounds and maintenance vouchers. Motion carried. Amy Olson presented Fair and Fairgrounds business. The grandstand event schedule was discussed. Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Mark Stead, to leave the Demolition Derby and Night of Destruction on Sunday afternoon and Sunday night. Motion carried. Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Mark Stead, to keep the local tractor pull with the antiques on Saturday night. Motion carried. Amy won a free movie night from a drawing at the IAFE Convention. The Party Company will set up a portable movie screen measuring 20’H and 25’W. The Fair is responsible for paying for rights to the chosen movie. Amy will check on available dates during the Fair. Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Mark Stead, to have the fireworks after the rodeo on Thursday night of the Fair. Motion carried. Gotta Dance team is available to perform in the Entertainment Tent on Friday afternoon of the Fair from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. at a cost of $300. Amy will look into sound needs for the performance. Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Mike Lieurance, to have Mr. Steve perform under the Kids Tent on Friday and Saturday of the Fair. The cost is $1,500 and one night’s lodging. Amy received the signed Packer football. She wants to add tickets for a Brewer game and Wisconsin sports apparel t-shirts for a raffle package at the Fair. Motion by Grant Loy, seconded by Dan Timmerman, to sign the contract with CC Bucking Bulls for the rodeo. Motion carried. Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Mike Lieurance, to send Lafayette County Speedway contracts to sign for the June 24 race and the August 16 Fair race. Motion carried. Amy went over details for the Wisconsin Association of Fairs Convention on January 8 -11, 2017. The committee chose to forgo doing a feasibility study for improvements to the swine barn. Discussion was held with the possibility of going directly with a contractor. Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Grant Loy, to approve Fair and Fairgrounds vouchers. Motion carried. A resolution establishing compensation for dog listings was presented. Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Dan Timmerman, to accept the resolution to increase the compensation paid to municipal treasurers within the assessment district from $.25 to $1.00 for each dog listed. Motion carried. Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Mike Lieurance, to pay dog claims to the Grant County Humane Society. Motion carried. Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Dan Timmerman, to adjourn.
