EDUCATION/FAIR COMMITTEE MEETING
Monday, July 17, 2017
9:00 a.m.
The meeting was called to order by Committee Chairman Roger Guthrie. Present, in addition to
Guthrie were John Patcle, Grant Loy, Dan Timmerman, Mike Lieurance, Bob Keeney, Amy
Olson, Bev Doll, Ted Bay, Lori Vesperman, Paul Ohlrogge, Kory Stalsberg, James Schneider,
Charisse Orth, Donna Peterson, Jack Johnson, Quin McCabe and Robby Ray. Mark Stead was
excused.
The meeting notice was posted at the UW-Extension Office, Youth & Agriculture Center and
mailed to media and Administration Building by Lori Vesperman and posted on the website by
the Grant County Clerk’s Office.
Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Dan Timmerman, to approve the agenda. Motion carried.
Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Grant Loy, to approve minutes of the meeting held
June 19, 2017. Motion carried.
Grant County UW-Extension and Youth & Agriculture Center business was presented.
Agent reports were given by Ted Bay, James Schneider, Kory Stalsberg, Donna Peterson,
Charisse Orth and Bev Doll.
Paul Ohlrogge, Area Extension Director, attended the meeting.
Discussion was held on sharing agriculture agents with Lafayette County.
Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Mike Lieurance, to approve UW-Extension vouchers.
Motion carried.
Amy Olson gave the grounds and maintenance and Youth & Agriculture Center report.
Professional Lighting Systems is going to look at the lights on the race track. There was a breaker
issue during the June 24 races. The lights need to be replaced. The plan will be to do a few at a
time. Amy will check with someone who works with similar lighting.
AED pads need to be replaced for the defibrillator in the Livestock Facility at a cost of $450.
Donated gravel for the fair is being delivered.
Painting has been done in the livestock facility sale arena and Crops Building and Grandstand
restrooms by inmates from the Grant County Sheriff’s Department. The dairy poleshed fencing
will also be painted.
Amy is going to request a scrubber from Public Property to be used in the buildings on the
Fairgrounds.
Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Mike Lieurance, to approve grounds and maintenance
vouchers. Motion carried.
Amy Olson presented Fair and Fairgrounds business.
Fair details were discussed.
Jack Johnson discussed the schedule for deputies working the fair. Rates will remain the same as
last year.
Nate Dreckman confirmed the presentation lap of local law enforcement vehicles.
Discussion was held on changing the Grant County Class 8,500 lb. Non Turbo tractor class from
8 mph to 6 mph.
Motion by Grant Loy, to lower the Grant County Class 8,500 lb. Non Turbo tractor class from
8 mph to 6 mph. Motion died due to lack of second.
Motion by Grant Loy, seconded by John Patcle to lower the Grant County Class 8,500 lb. Non
Turbo tractor class rate 1 mph to 7 mph. Motion carried.
The evening closing schedule is as follows: Tuesday – Grant Loy, Wednesday – Dan
Timmerman, Thursday – Mike Lieurance, Friday – John Patcle, Saturday – Roger Guthrie and
Sunday – Roger Guthrie. Pat Schroeder and Steve Adrian will help with Saturday and Sunday
night closing.
Dan Timmerman is the lead person for the Grandstand food stand.
Mike Lieurance will get eight 3’ x 5’ flags to line the walkway for Veterans Day at the Fair on
Sunday.
Yard signs and banners advertising the fair are up.
Outstanding fair persons were selected.
Parking and use of gators were discussed.
TDS internet service at the rate of 50 Mbps for the Fairgrounds was discussed.
Motion by Mike Lieurance, seconded by John Patcle, to get 50 Mbps, unlimited internet service
from TDS for Amy’s office, the Livestock Facility and the Eckstein Exhibit Hall. Motion carried.
Quin McCabe and Robby Ray attended the meeting to discuss midget car racing.
More information on the swine barn will be provided at the August 7 meeting.
Contracts were signed for: the dunk tank, Food Stand - St. Clements, Beer Stand - Lancaster
Sluggers, and Fireworks - Brad Clark. Rain date for the fireworks will be Friday night.
Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Grant Loy, to approve Fair and Fairgrounds vouchers.
Motion carried.
Motion by Mike Lieurance, seconded by John Patcle, to pay the dog claim in the amount of $110
to the Dubuque Regional Humane Society and send on to the full County Board. Motion carried.
Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Grant Loy, to adjourn. Motion carried.
The next meeting is scheduled for August 7 at 9:00 a.m.
