HomeMy WebLinkAbout04 Minutes April 16 2018AGRICULTURE AND EXTENSION EDUCATION/FAIR COMMITTEE MEETING Monday, April 16, 2018 9:00 a.m. The meeting was called to order by Committee Chairman Roger Guthrie. Present, in addition to Guthrie were John Patcle, Mark Stead, Grant Loy, Mike Lieurance, Bob Keeney, Amy Olson, Paul Ohlrogge, Lori Vesperman, James Schneider, Bev Doll, Charisse Orth, Shane Drinkwater and Lorna Wolf. Dan Timmerman was excused. The meeting notice was posted at the UW-Extension Office, Youth & Agriculture Center and mailed to media and Administration Building by Lori Vesperman and posted on the website by the Grant County Clerk’s Office. Motion by Grant Loy, seconded by John Patcle, to approve the agenda, starting with item 7. f, followed by Ground & Maintenance/Youth & Ag Center, next Fair & Fairgrounds business then UW-Extension business. Motion carried. Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Grant Loy, to approve minutes of the meeting held March 26, 2018 with changes. Motion carried. Lorna Wolf, representing the Lancaster Wrestling Club, was present to discuss use of the Eckstein Hall for a fundraiser. Youth 4-K through 12 grade benefit from the club. The committee acknowledged the Wrestling Club’s involvement in the Fair activities. Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Mike Lieurance, to allow the Lancaster Wrestling Club use of the Eckstein Hall for a fundraiser on July 28, 2018, accepting a donation. Motion carried. Shane Drinkwater was introduced as the new Information Technology Director. Amy Olson gave the grounds and maintenance and Youth & Agriculture Center report. Amy Olson presented Fair and Fairgrounds business. Amy updated the committee on sponsorship, advertising, the Fair book and entertainment. Discussion was held on the swine barn. The fundraiser meal was a success, raising more than $8,000. Amy continues to work on the tractor pull fundraiser for the swine barn. The galvanized pens for the swine barn will cost $42,105. Roger offered to pick them up, which deducted $750 of delivery fees off of the cost. Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Grant Loy to purchase the galvanized pens for the swine barn in the amount of $42,105, from Triton Barn Systems, paying half down. Motion carried. Amy, Roger and Mark attended the district meeting in Viroqua on April 4. Peter from DATCAP weight and measures covered scale requirements for livestock weigh ins at the Fair. The current scale does not meet requirements. Amy will check on the feasibility of leasing, purchasing one, or sharing in the purchase of a new scale with other counties. Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Mike Lieurance, to approve fairground vouchers. Motion carried. Grant County UW-Extension and Youth & Agriculture Center business was presented. Motion by Mike Lieurance, seconded by Grant Loy, to approve UW-Extension vouchers. Motion carried. Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Grant Loy, to move to closed session per State Statute 19.85 (1) (c) to conduct interviews for the Agriculture Educator position. Roll call vote unanimous. Motion carried. Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Mike Lieurance to return to open session. Motion carried. Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Grant Loy, to offer the Agriculture Educator position to Choice #1, if not accepted, offer to Choice #2. Motion carried. Motion by Mike Lieurance, seconded by Grant Loy, to approve the livestock claim in the amount of $300 to the Grant County Humane Society and send on to the full county board for approval. One no vote. Motion carried. Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Grant Loy, to adjourn. Motion carried.
