HomeMy WebLinkAbout06 Minutes June 18 2018AGRICULTURE AND EXTENSION EDUCATION/FAIR COMMITTEE MEETING Monday, June 18, 2018 9:00 a.m. The meeting was called to order by Committee Chairman Roger Guthrie. Present, in addition to Guthrie were John Patcle, Mark Stead, Gary Northouse, Bob Keeney, Amy Olson, Paul Ohlrogge, Lori Vesperman, James Schneider, Bev Doll, Charisse Orth, Amanda Cauffman and Donna Peterson. Mike Lieurance was excused. The meeting notice was posted at the UW-Extension Office, Youth & Agriculture Center and mailed to media and Administration Building by Lori Vesperman and posted on the website by the Grant County Clerk’s Office. Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Gary Northouse, to approve the agenda. Motion carried. Motion by Gary Northouse, seconded by John Patcle, to approve minutes of the meeting held May 21, 2018. Motion carried. Grant County UW-Extension and Youth & Agriculture Center business was presented. Agent reports were given by Bev Doll, Donna Peterson, Charisse Orth, James Schneider and Amanda Cauffman. Paul Ohlrogge gave the Area Extension Director Update. The FoodWIse program will be added to Green County, now being present in all four counties. The Grant County 4-H position will be posted in the month of June. Lafayette County Agriculture Educator position, with a focus on Crops & Soils, will be posted in July. Screening of the Green County Agriculture Educator, which will have a dairy focus, is taking place in the afternoon. Agents are now doing mid-year reporting. The snowmobile resolution was presented to the committee. Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Gary Northouse, to accept and send the snowmobile resolution authorizing participation in public funding for snowmobile trails for the 2018-2019 snowmobile year, on to the full County Board for approval. Motion carried. Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Gary Northouse, to approve UW-Extension vouchers. Motion carried. Amy Olson gave the grounds and maintenance and Youth & Agriculture Center report. Amy ordered two sets of bleachers for the swine barn. The Grant County 4-H Adult Leaders Association is donating the bleachers. Maintenance staff and Amy are planning to view the pens at Lodi to prepare for installation. Wooden posts were put in for walk through gates to be installed in the east side center alley in the livestock facility. The gates were donated by the Block and Bridle and Pioneer Dairy Clubs. Amy Olson presented Fair and Fairgrounds business. Contracts for the 2018 Fair were signed with St. Clement’s and Bloomington Area Sportsman Club for the food stand and with Lancaster Wrestling Club, Knights of Columbus and Bloomington Fire Department for the beer stand. Road Crew is no longer working the food stand; Maple Street Day Care has been added for Wednesday night. Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by John Patcle to approve the above contracts. Motion carried. Vendor contracts are coming in. The Fair Department will be featured in the July Communicator Newsletter. Amy is able to purchase buckets for bucket of beer from Hermsen’s. Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Gary Northouse purchase buckets from Hermsen’s Hardware for $1.05 each. Motion carried. Fairbook changes were discussed to add honey in Junior Class and a wine class in open class. Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by John Patcle to add a honey class to Junior Class entries in the 2018 Fairbook. Motion carried. Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by John Patcle to add a wine class to Open Class entries in the 2018 Fairbook. Motion carried. IT confirmed Amy needs a new computer for her office. Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Gary Northouse, to purchase a Hewlett Packard Enterprise Computer with 8G RAM as recommended by the IT Department. Motion carried. The pre Fair meeting with superintendents and organizations will be held Thursday, August 2. Organizations will begin at 7:00 p.m. and superintendents at 7:30 p.m. Amy gave an update on the swine barn. Keith from KD Engineering approved a change order to remove blacktop and put power underground to the swine barn. The original cost of putting power to the pole was $3135.00; $2310.00 will be deducted for no power pole and no blacktop work, with an ending cost of $810.00. The swine building was inspected by the state and passed approval. Amy spoke with Steve Fritz, Fritz Plumbing Heating, about fixing the wash rack, putting the water on a separate line from the Open Dairy Barn and doing plumbing in the swine barn. The estimated cost is no more than $3500.00. Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Gary Northouse, to have Fritz Plumbing and Heating fix the wash rack and do plumbing in the swine for no more than $3500.00. Motion carried. Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Gary Northouse to pay Wolf’s Construction in the amount of $75,064.70. Motion carried. The June 8 Tractor Pull Fundraiser for the swine barn was not held due to weather and will not be rescheduled. Discussion was held on future fundraisers. An open to barder contract with Queen B Radio was signed for Silver Sponsorship. Sponsorship and promotion was discussed. It has been challenging to get sponsors for the Rodeo. West Grant Saddle Club will be invited to the July meeting to clarify their plans for the arena area. Motion by Gary Northouse, seconded by John Patcle, to approve fairground vouchers. Motion carried. Motion by Roger Guthrie, seconded by Gary Northouse, to approve the livestock claim in the amount of $450 to the Grant County Humane Society and send on to the full county board for approval. One no vote. Motion carried. Amy Olson explained that due to schedule conflicts for the Area Extension Director, Paul Ohlrogge, who is now UW-Extension Department Head, Lori Vesperman will be attending county budget meetings and work with Paul on the budget. Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Gary Northouse, to adjourn. Motion carried.
