EDUCATION/FAIR COMMITTEE MEETING
Monday, October 15, 2018
9:00 a.m.
The meeting was called to order by Committee Chairman Roger Guthrie. Present, in addition to
Guthrie were, John Patcle, Mark Stead, Mike Lieurance, Gary Northouse, Bob Keeney, Amy
Olson, Paul Ohlrogge, Lori Vesperman, James Schneider, Bev Doll, Amanda Cauffman, Donna
Peterson, Charisse Orth, Shane Drinkwater, Dick Wiedenbeck, Matt Graney and Sara Burks.
The meeting notice was posted at the UW-Extension Office, Youth & Agriculture Center and
mailed to media and Administration Building by Lori Vesperman and posted on the website by
the Grant County Clerk’s Office.
Motion by Mike Lieurance, seconded by John Patcle, to approve the amended agenda. Motion
carried.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Gary Northouse, to approve minutes of the meeting held
September 17, 2018. Motion carried.
Grant County UW-Extension and Youth & Agriculture Center business was presented.
Agent reports were given by James Schneider, Amanda Cauffman, Donna Peterson, Charisse
Orth and Bev Doll.
Paul Ohlrogge gave the Area Extension Director update. Screening for the Agriculture Educator
position in Lafayette County is the afternoon of October 15. The Grant County Community
Educator position application deadline is Thursday, October 18. Discussion on expanding access
will be discussed at a future meeting. The 2019 flat fee contract for UWEX educators will be
ready to sign at the November meeting.
Motion by Mike Lieurance, seconded by Gary Northouse, to approve UW-Extension vouchers.
Motion carried.
Amy Olson gave the grounds and maintenance and Youth & Agriculture Center report.
Amy contacted John Hauth regarding water runoff. The ceiling in the women’s restroom in the
Crops Building fell in. Maintenance staff will do repairs over the winter. Repairs/maintenance on
the Livestock Facility overhead doors was done by Carey’s Seamless Gutters and Long Grove
Overhead Doors. A memorial bench and picnic table were donated by Dorothy Edge’s family.
Camper storage space is full. Amy complimented the IT Department for their work on getting
internet service to the Livestock Facility that was needed for a sale.
Amy Olson presented Fair and Fairgrounds business.
Dick Wiedenbeck, Lancaster FFA Alumni, requested to use 40 tables for their annual breakfast
and toy show.
Motion by Mike Lieurance, seconded by John Patcle, to allow Lancaster FFA Alumni the use of
tables at no cost. Motion carried.
Shane Drinkwater gave an update on fiber optic installation.
Amy gave the final 2018 Fair report to the committee.
Discussion was held on 2019 Fair entertainment.
Hard Hit Promotions informed Amy 2019 will be the last year for the Demo Derby but they will
continue with the Night of Destruction in future years.
Motion by Mike Lieurance, seconded by Mark Stead, to sign a contract with Hard Hit
Promotions for the 2019 fair at a cost of $11,500 plus a $1,500 Platinum Sponsorship. Motion
carried.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by John Patcle, to sign a contract with Tri-State Truck &
Tractor pullers for the 2019 Fair at a cost of $8,000. Motion carried.
Motion by Gary Northouse, seconded by Mike Lieurance to sign the Lancaster Jaycee lease.
Motion carried.
Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Mark Stead, to sign the contract with Lancaster Sluggers for
use of the Eckstein Exhibit Hall in 2019. Motion carried.
Matt Graney and Sara Burks, West Grant Saddle Club, were present to discuss arena area wash
off due to rain. Gravel will be added to the road, and graded, to divert water runoff into the arena.
Amy made contacts regarding pole replacement on the Fairgrounds. Baker Ironworks will set one
pole already on hand and set one pole purchased from Baker Ironworks for a cost $645.
Reynolds Electric will do labor and electric on two poles with a new LED yard light on one pole
at a cost of $520.
Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Mark Stead, to have Baker Ironworks and Reynolds Electric
complete installation of two poles on the Fairgrounds for a total cost of $1,165. Motion carried.
Amy, Roger and Mark attended the District Fair Meeting in Elroy. Amy was elected to a 3-year
term as a district representative to the Board of Directors for the Wisconsin Association of Fairs
(WAF).
The WAF Convention is January 6-10, 2019, at the Chula Vista in Wisconsin Dells was
discussed.
Motion by Mike Lieurance, seconded by Mark Stead, to approve fairground vouchers. Motion
carried.
Motion by Gary Northouse, seconded by Mike Lieurance, to pay livestock claims in the amount
of $450 to the Grant County Humane Society. The County Board approved the claims at the
October 2 meeting, contingent upon this committee’s approval. Motion carried.
Motion by Roger Guthrie, seconded by Gary Northouse, to approve the livestock claim in the
amount of $300 to the Grant County Humane Society and send on to the full county board for
approval. Motion carried.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Roger Guthrie, to adjourn. Motion carried.
The next regular scheduled meeting will be Thursday, November 8, at 11:00 a.m.
