HomeMy WebLinkAboutAg & Ext Fair 8 Minutes August 29 2018AGRICULTURE AND EXTENSION EDUCATION/FAIR COMMITTEE MEETING Wednesday, August 29, 2018 9:00 a.m. The meeting was called to order by Committee Chairman Roger Guthrie. Present, in addition to Guthrie were John Patcle, Mark Stead, Gary Northouse, Bob Keeney, Amy Olson, Paul Ohlrogge, Lori Vesperman, James Schneider, Bev Doll, Charisse Orth, Amanda Cauffman, Donna Peterson and Shane Drinkwater. Mike Lieurance was excused. The meeting notice was posted at the UW-Extension Office, Youth & Agriculture Center and mailed to media and Administration Building by Lori Vesperman and posted on the website by the Grant County Clerk’s Office. Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Gary Northouse, to approve the agenda. Motion carried. Motion by Gary Northouse, seconded by Mark Stead, to approve minutes of the meetings held July 16, August 2, 8, 16, 17, 18 and 19, 2018. Motion carried. Grant County UW-Extension and Youth & Agriculture Center business was presented. The Alzheimer’s & Dementia Alliance requested a reduced rate for the Alzheimer’s Walk fundraiser in September, 2018. Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by John Patcle, to waive the fee for use of the Youth & Ag Center on September 28 & 29, 2018 for the Alzheimer’s Walk fundraising event. Motion carried. Agent reports were given by Bev Doll, Donna Peterson, Amanda Cauffman, Charisse Orth and James Schneider. Amanda spoke with Matt Glewen regarding hosting Farm technology Days. The committee will discuss the topic in March 2019. Paul Ohlrogge gave the Area Extension Director Update. Charisse Orth was hired as the full time 4-H Coordinator. Paul shared a draft narrative of the 2019 flat fee contract for the committee to review. The contract is to be signed by December 31, 2018, with the dollar amounts being the same as the 2018. Lafayette County is re-advertising for the Agriculture Educator position. James recommends keeping $10,000 in the 2019 Resource budget for Grant County Tourism Grants but modifying categories for distribution, focusing on social media. James shared that the Grant County Tourism Council recommended Grant County reconsider their involvement in Hidden Valleys and spend the funds in a different way. The committee is not in favor of discontinuing at this time since ads have already been sold for 2019. Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Gary Northouse, to continue association with Hidden Valleys in 2019 and take to the full County Board for consideration of discontinuing in 2020 and beyond. Motion carried. Due to the budget at the state level, funding is not available for a full time Community Resource Development position in Grant County. The last day for the interim contract with James Schneider is December 31, 2018. Motion by Gary Northouse, seconded by John Patcle, to increase Grant County’s contribution to support an 80-100% Community Resource Development position. Motion carried. Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Gary Northouse, to purchase two computers. Motion carried. Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Gary Northouse, to recommend sending the 2019 UW- Extension budget, pending information on health insurance costs, on to the Executive Committee. Motion carried. Motion by Gary Northouse, seconded by John Patcle, to approve UW-Extension vouchers. Motion carried. Amy Olson gave the grounds and maintenance and Youth & Agriculture Center report. Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by John Patcle, to recommend sending the 2019 Youth & Agriculture Center budget, pending information on health insurance costs, on to the Executive Committee. Motion carried. Amy Olson presented Fair and Fairgrounds business. Discussion was held on the carnival. Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Gary Northouse, to research other carnival opportunities for future fairs. Motion carried. Discussion was held on paying for pigs that died after leaving the Fairgrounds. A pig died at Fennimore Livestock Exchange due to stress. A pig trucked to Weber’s was left on the trailer due to stress, and died on the trailer. Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by John Patcle, to following guidelines in the Fairbook and not pay for pigs that died after leaving the fairgrounds. One no vote. Motion carried. Amy will make the final payment for the swine barn to Wolf Construction. Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Gary Northouse, to recommend sending the 2019 Fair budget, pending information on health insurance costs, on to the Executive Committee. Motion carried. Motion by Gary Northouse, seconded by John Patcle, to approve fairground vouchers. Motion carried. Motion by Gary Northouse, seconded by Roger Guthrie, to pay livestock claims in the amount of $450 to the Grant County Humane Society. The County Board approved the claims, contingent upon this committee’s approval. Motion carried. Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Gary Northouse, to adjourn. Motion carried.
