EDUCATION/FAIR COMMITTEE MEETING
Monday, February 19, 2018
9:00 a.m.
The meeting was called to order by Committee Chairman Roger Guthrie. Present, in addition to
Guthrie were John Patcle, Mark Stead, Grant Loy, Dan Timmerman, Bob Keeney, Amy Olson,
Paul Ohlrogge, Lori Vesperman, James Schneider, Donna Peterson, Sherry Quamme, Quint
Hurtz, Nancy Rutherford, Jean Patten, Denise Deaton Tolzman, Tonia Vial, Kathy Kopp, Jessica
Sawinski Couch, Chris Hahn, Dan Yutzy, Stephen Swarey, Henry Stoltzfus, Stephen Stoltzfus,
Henry Fisher, Seth Byler, Henry Lapp, Benjamin Swarey, Levi Fisher, Roger Connely and Pete
Heberlein. Mike Lieurance was excused from the meeting.
The meeting notice was posted at the UW-Extension Office, Youth & Agriculture Center and
mailed to media and Administration Building by Lori Vesperman and posted on the website by
the Grant County Clerkâs Office.
Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Mark Stead, to approve the agenda. Motion carried.
Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Grant Loy, to approve minutes of the meetings held
January 22, 2018 and February 8, 2018. Motion carried.
Grant County UW-Extension and Youth & Agriculture Center business was presented.
Eleven Grant County Tourism Grant applications requesting a total of $20,135.00 were received.
A total of $10,000 was available for awards. Representatives from organizations were invited,
but not required to attend the meeting. Those present gave brief summaries and answered
questions. The committee discussed, scored and ranked applications at the end of the meeting.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by John Patcle, to award the top five organizations the full
amount each requested, totaling $9885.00. One no vote. Motion carried.
Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Mark Stead, to award the balance of $115.00 to
Cassville Tourism. Motion carried.

Paul Ohlrogge gave the Area Extension Director Update. Paul thanked the committee for their
patience in the absence of an Agriculture Educator and shared some of the things Gene Schriefer,
Iowa Agriculture Educator, has been assisting Grant County with. The Grant County position has
been posted with March 16 as the closing date. He reported on other positions being filled in the
four-county area.
Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Mark Stead, to approve UW-Extension vouchers.
Motion carried.
Amy Olson gave the grounds and maintenance and Youth & Agriculture Center report.
Five applications were received for the UW-Extension limited term employee position.
Maintenance staff prepped the swine barn for teardown. The pens in the swine barn are sold. The
sound system was installed in the Auditorium of the Youth & Agriculture Center, costing $190
less than first planned.
Amy Olson presented Fair and Fairgrounds business.
Parties attended the committee meeting showing interest in dismantling and disposing the swine
barn. They were informed proof of insurance/and or a hold harmless form would be required. The
entire building would need to be removed no later than April 13.
The committee and parties agreed it would be fair for parties to discuss the amount of their offers
in private and then present them to the committee for review.
Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Mark Stead, to have interested parties hold discussions
in private and then present their written offers to the committee. Motion carried.
Mark Stead opened the three offers presented. Dan Yutzy - $1,000.00, Seth Byler - $1,500.00 and
Peter Heberlein - $500.00.
Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Mark Stead, to accept the highest offer by Seth Byler
in the amount of $1,500.00, contingent upon signing a hold harmless agreement. Motion carried.
Discussion was held on Dairyland Antique Tractor Pullers pulling at the 2018 Fair. Amy will
prepare a contract.
Amy presented tent proposals for the 2018 Fair.
Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Grant Loy, to stay with Bel Aire, the current company used
for tents, for the 2018 Fair. Motion carried.
Fairbook changes were presented.
Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Mark Stead, to accept fairbook changes to the Foods &
Nutrition Department. Motion carried.
Discussion was held on the feasibility of the Draft Horse Show.
Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Grant Loy, to no longer sponsor trophies and ribbons
for the Grant County Fair Draft Horse Show. Due to low numbers the feasibility of holding the
show in 2019 will be reviewed. Motion carried.
Discussion was held on fundraising for the new swine barn. Amy is looking for involvement
from 4-H & FFA swine project families. Fundraising has begun with a Pork Supper on April 2
and a Tractor Pull on June 8. Tom Bennet and Tony Kluesner are donating their time and talent
for meat preparation for June 8. They will only charge for the cost of the meat to sell in the food
stand that evening.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Dan Timmerman, to accept contracts from the Party
Company, Hard Hit Promotions, Nick D Entertainment and Lafayette County Promotions for the
June 23 race and the race held at the Fair on August 15, 2018. Motion carried.
Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Grant Loy, to approve vouchers. Motion carried.
Motion by Roger Guthrie, seconded by Grant Loy, to approve the livestock claim in the amount
of $570 to the Grant County Humane Society and send on to the full county board for approval.
One no vote. Motion carried.
Amy informed the committee her evaluation will be held at the March 19 monthly meeting and
the bid opening for the swine barn will be at 1:00 p.m.
Mark Stead informed the committee the Southwest Auto Club showed interest in holding a car
show on June 8 in conjunction with the tractor pull. They will also be checking with another
Platteville club and a group from Lancaster. Roger offered to buy one ticket per car entered, for
entry to the grandstand event.
Motion by Dan Timmerman, seconded by Mark Stead, to adjourn. Motion carried.
The next regular scheduled meeting is set for March 19, 2018, at 9:00 a.m.
