EDUCATION/FAIR COMMITTEE MEETING
Monday, May 20 , 2019
9:00 a.m.
The meeting was called to order by Committee Chairman Roger Guthrie. Present, in addition to
Guthrie were John Patcle, Mike Lieurance, Gary Northouse, Bob Keeney, Amy Olson , Paul
Ohlrogge, Lori Vesperman, Amanda Cauffman, Bev Doll, James Schneider, Charisse Orth,
Donna Peterson and Linda Hahn. Mark Stead was excused.
The meeting notice was posted at the UW-Extension Office, Youth & Agriculture Center and
mailed to media and Administration Building by Lori Vesperman and posted on the website by
the Grant County Clerk’s Office.
Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Mike Lieurance, to approve the agenda. Motion carried.
Motion by Mike Lieurance, seconded by John Patcle, to approve minutes of the meeting held
April 15, 2019. Motion carried.
Grant County UW-Extension and Youth & Agriculture Center business was presented.
Linda Hahn was present to request a reduced rate for the Cancer Coalition fundraiser to be held in
the Youth & Ag Center.
Motion by Mike Lieurance, seconded by John Patcle, to waive the fee for use of the Youth & Ag
Center for the Cancer Coalition fundraising event on September 21, 2019. Motion carried.
Agent reports were given by Bev Doll, Amanda Cauffman, Charisse Orth, Donna Peterson, and
James Schneider. Charisse informed the committee that there will no longer be 4-H Queen
Crowning. A 4-H Ambassador will be selected at awards night.
Paul Ohlrogge gave the Area Extension Director update. A Civil Rights Review for the Extension
Office was held on April 17. Paul shared the Situational Analysis - an understanding on existing
and emerging issues and opportunities in the state that Extension programming could address.
Reviews for Jenny Dixon and Lori Vesperman were completed on May 8.
Discussion was held on hosting Farm Technology Days. It was decided Grant County will not
plan to host Farm Technology Days in the near future.
Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Gary Northouse, to approve UW-Extension vouchers.
Motion carried.
Amy Olson gave the grounds and maintenance and Youth & Agriculture Center report.
Marty Mumm spoke with Matt from Allied Stone regarding the cement in front of the Youth &
Agriculture Center. They feel it was bad cement. Matt will make things right. Garbage removal
rate increased 4%. Gary, the summer maintenance LTE, will be starting after Memorial Day.
There are issues with the 2001 Gator starting and running. The lawn mower needs to be repaired
at Sloans. The defibrillator battery in the Auditorium of the Youth & Ag Center needs to be
replaced. Steve Braun is ordering one. Lifeline came to work on the sound system. A tree in the
midway area had to be removed due to damage from a storm. Electricity was not working in the
pit area. After determining it was an issue relating directly to the Fairgounds, repair was done by
Edge Electric since they were on the grounds doing work for the Saddle Club.
Amy Olson presented Fair and Fairgrounds business.
WDATCP is waving the testing of fair poultry due to a shortage in the antigen used. They
informed Amy ID can be held at the Fairgrounds or done onsite at exhibitor’s location.
Amy received a letter from Barb with Calkins Midway stating they will have new rides from
another company. Amy spoke with Randy from Tricor who said proof of insurance would need
to be provided from the companies.
Amy is continuing to work on vendor letters, ordering trophies and getting judges.
Andy Puetz shared his concerns with Amy regarding limited space for goat exhibits. Amy
informed him that if it becomes an issue there may need to be a limit put on the number of goats
per family that can be entered into the fair.
Amy would like to attend a grant writing class in Platteville to gain insight into finding out where
to find grants to apply for.
Motion by Mike Lieurance, seconded by Gary Northouse, to have Amy attend the grant writing
class being held in Platteville. Motion carried.
Fair poster and brochures are being finalized. Thermos cups will be available for sale for $5.00.
Amy will put two in each platinum sponsorship basket. Coasters are done. Yard signs are
ordered.
All event passes are available through the month of June for $30.00.
The Fairgrounds was the recipient of a $3,000 grant Amy applied for from Compeer Financial for
two new water fountains with bottle fill feature.
Amy has additional rain insurance information for the June 7 tractor pull.
Motion by Gary Northouse, seconded by John Patcle, to get rain insurance for the June 7 tractor
pull for a timeframe of 8:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m., for up to $10,000, at a cost of $1,068, with the add
on of location by weather command for an additional $75. Motion carried.
Amy had to replace the printer/copier in her office that was recently purchased due to no
duplexing feature. The new replacement copier was an additional $132.
Amy asked the committee who is interested in attending the 2020 Fair Convention January 5-8 in
Wisconsin Dells.
Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Mike Lieurance, to approve fairgrounds vouchers. Motion
carried.
Motion by Mike Lieurance, seconded by Gary Northouse, to approve the livestock claim in the
amount of $900 to the Grant County Humane Society and send on to the full county board for
approval. One no vote. Motion carried.
The committee judged posters promoting the fair.
Motion by Mike Lieurance, seconded by Gary Northouse, to adjourn. Motion carried.
The next regular scheduled meeting will be Monday, June17, at 9:00 a.m.
