EDUCATION/FAIR COMMITTEE MEETING
Monday, July 15, 2019
9:00 a.m.
The meeting was called to order by Committee Chairman Roger Guthrie. Present, in addition to
Guthrie were John Patcle, Mark Stead, Mike Lieurance, Gary Northouse, Bob Keeney, Amy Olson,
Lori Vesperman, Amanda Cauffman, Bev Doll, James Schneider, Charisse Orth, Donna Peterson and
Shane Drinkwater.
The meeting notice was posted at the Extension Office, Youth & Agriculture Center and mailed to
media and Administration Building by Lori Vesperman and posted on the website by the Grant
County Clerk’s Office.
Motion by Gary Northouse, seconded by Mike Lieurance, to approve the agenda. Motion carried.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Gary Northouse, to approve minutes of the meeting held July 15,
2019. Motion carried.
Grant County Extension and Youth & Agriculture Center business was presented.
Agent reports were given by James Schneider, Charisse Orth, Amanda Patterson, Donna Peterson and
Bev Doll.
Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Mike Lieurance, to approve Extension vouchers. Motion carried.
Amy Olson gave the grounds and maintenance and Youth & Agriculture Center report.
General grounds prep is underway for the fair. Amy ordered two 12-foot panels and two gates to
make a wash rack in the swine barn.
Amy Olson presented Fair and Fairgrounds business.
Discussion was held on superintendents for the fair.
Amy will be getting bids for racetrack lights to put in the 2020 budget.
Shane Drinkwater shared that the IT Department is working on stable Wi-Fi on the fairgrounds and
plan to have it done by fair. A fiber optic distribution box will be mounted in the Youth & Ag Center
and will reach out to the Administration Building and Sheriff’s Department.
Discussion was held on pizza being added to the grandstand food stand this year. The carnival does
not have a pizza stand.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Gary Northouse, to add pizza from New Horizons to the
grandstand food stand. Motion carried.
The double-poled Entertainment Tent cost will increase $722. Bel Aire will be setting up tents the
Friday before the fair due to another opportunity.
It is questionable whether Blue Boy Bakery will be able to make cookies for the Kids’ Tent this year.
Amy will look into this and other sources.
Amy will plan on getting buns from Ma’s bakery for grandstand food stand if they can be delivered.
Amy plans to deliver sponsorship thank you baskets this week and get the three yard signs up next
week. Nine clubs are participating in the “Promote the Fair” signs. Banners are ready. The Lamar sign
will be up today. It will be taken down Monday of the Fair and given to Amy to put up for
advertisement.
Charisse shared there was no consensus for the options given for the Livestock Auction photo banner.
Grantland Graphics is putting proofs together for the July 29 meeting. A smaller version will need to
be done for the hog barn.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by John Patcle, to accept contracts with the Stoney Boys band and
with Lancaster Sluggers for the beer stand and Grant County Dairy Promoters for the grandstand food
stand. Motion carried.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by John Patcle, to select Romona Reynolds, Rick & Linda Rech and
Judy Breitsprecker as outstanding persons. Motion carried.
WLIC will no longer be renting out their RFID tag readers after this year. Amy will check into
options after this year’s fair.
Amy has been working on the 2020 budgets. The preliminary fair budget will increase 15.6%
(without lights) and the Youth & Ag Center budget will increase 4%.
Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Gary Northouse, to approve fairgrounds vouchers. Motion
carried.
Amy will check into available scales to see if she can get a smaller one for sheep and goats.
Roger spoke Norm at Weber’s Processing Plant in Cuba City and informed him not to take more
animals from the fair than they can. Swine cannot stay overnight this year, as it did not work out well
last year.
Amanda will check with processing plants to set the carcass show schedule.
Discussion was held on sales at the stock car races.
Motion by Mike Lieurance, seconded by Gary Northouse, to approve the livestock claim in the
amount of $900 to the Grant County Humane Society and send on to the full county board for
approval. Motion carried.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Gary Northouse, to adjourn until August 1. Motion carried.
The next regular scheduled meeting will be Monday, August 5, at 9:00 a.m.
