EDUCATION/FAIR COMMITTEE MEETING
Monday, November 18, 2019
9:00 a.m.
The meeting was called to order by Committee Chairman Roger Guthrie. Present in addition to
Guthrie were John Patcle, Mark Stead, Mike Lieurance, Gary Northouse, Bob Keeney, Amy
Olson, Lori Vesperman, Paul Ohlrogge and Gary Munson.
The meeting notice was posted at the Extension Office, Youth & Agriculture Center and mailed
to media and Administration Building by Lori Vesperman and posted on the website by the Grant
County Clerkâs Office.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Mike Lieurance, to approve the agenda. Motion carried.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Gary Northouse, to approve minutes of the meeting held
October 21, 2019. Motion carried.
Grant County Extension and Youth & Agriculture Center business was presented.
Educators were at an all program conference in Madison. A report from James Schneider was
handed out to the Committee. Paul Ohlrogee shared initial interviews for the Nutrition Education
position will be held November 22, with final interviews scheduled for December 2. The water
quality position has been advertised. No county funding has been requested. Paul presented the
contract for Extension Educators between Grant County and the Board of Regents of the
University of Wisconsin System to be signed.
Motion by Mike Lieurance, seconded Gary Northouse, to approve the contract between Grant
County and the Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System. Motion carried.
Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Gary Northouse, to approve Extension vouchers. Motion
carried.
Amy Olson gave the grounds and maintenance and Youth & Agriculture Center report.
Gary Munson, Platteville Dairy Days, was present to find out what the decision was on using
recycling containers he offered to donate to the Fairgrounds for use during the Grant County Fair.
Amy checked with Faherty and the conclusion is it will not be feasible to use the recycling
containers.
A heater for the handicapped restroom has been ordered. Winter storage for vehicles is full, with
a waiting list.
Amy Olson presented Fair and Fairgrounds business.
Discussion was held on entertainment for the 2020 Grant County Fair.
Local bands will start at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Cost of security for the 2020 Fair is $5,000.
Motion by Mike Lieurance, seconded by Gary Northouse, to raise pit passes to $20 and allow all
event wristbands in the pits for no additional cost. Motion carried.
June events were discussed. Motion by Mike Lieurance, seconded by John Patcle to hold a
tractor pull on Friday, June 12, 2020, if a sled is available. Motion carried
Amy will speak with Dan Engelke, Platteville Optimist Club, regarding times stands are required
to be open during the fair.
Fairbook changes were discussed.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Gary Northouse, to add fairbook changes as agreed upon by
the Fair Manager, Ag Educator, and 4-H Coordinator. Motion carried.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Gary Northouse to purchase a WLIC reader and program if
needed. Motion carried.
The price with Bungart Motorsports for a sled for two nights of tractor pulling at the 2020 Fair is
$5,500 plus a motel room.
The Wisconsin Association of Fairs Convention schedule was discussed.
Amy gave an update on her state board position. She was elected 2020 Grant County Tourism
Council President.
The Rendevous, held in Prairie du Chien, is seeking a backup location, if needed, for June14-16,
2020. The cost would be $500 per day plus reimbursables. No deposit is required.
Discussion was held on racetrack lighting. Advertising with specs will need to be done.
Motion by Mike Lieurance, seconded by Gary Northouse, to approve fairgrounds vouchers.
Motion carried.
Motion by Gary Northouse, seconded by Mike Lieurance, to approve the livestock claim in the
amount of $150 to the Grant County Humane Society and send on to the full county board for
approval. Motion carried.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Mike Lieurance, to adjourn. Adjourned at 11:25 a.m. Motion
carried.
The next regular scheduled meeting will be Monday, January 20, at 9:00 a.m. and to the call of
the Chair on January 6, 2020.
