EDUCATION/FAIR COMMITTEE MEETING
Monday, July 13, 2020
1:00 p.m.
The July 13 meeting was held by Zoom and called to order by Chairman Pat Schroeder. Present
in person were Chairman Schroeder, Roger Guthrie, Mark Stead, John Patcle, Mike Lieurance,
Bob Keeney, Amy Olson, Lori Vesperman, Paul Ohlrogge, Shane Drinkwater, Jenny Dixon,
Andy Buttles, Mike McConnell, Arin Crooks, Lynn Crooks, Alicia Prill-Adams, Pam LaBarge,
Sara Burks, Tera Montgomery. Present by Zoom were Gary Northouse, James Schneider,
Amanda Cauffman, Charisse Orth, Donna Peterson and Bev Doll.
The meeting notice was posted at the Extension Office, Youth & Agriculture Center,
Administration Building, on the Grant County website and mailed to media.
Motion by Mike Lieurance, seconded by John Patcle, to approve the agenda. Motion carried.
Motion by Roger Guthrie, seconded by Mark Stead, to approve minutes of the meetings held
May 26 and June 8, 2020. Motion carried.
Grant County Extension and Youth & Agriculture Center business was presented.
Educator reports were given by James Schneider, Amanda Patterson, Charisse Orth, Donna
Peterson and Bev Doll. James requested the Mining and Rollo Jamison Museums’ Grant County
Tourism Grant project be modified to reflect website improvements for virtual programming.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by John Patcle, to accept the modification of the The Mining
and Rollo Jamison Museums’ Tourism Grant project. Motion carried.
Paul gave the Area Extension Director update. At this time Educators will continue
telecommunicating, following UW guidelines. They will be allowed to work in the office with
approval and staggered schedules. If in-person events need to be held they will need to be
approved and have 10 or less people in attendance. Farm calls have started to be made by
Amanda. Paul will check into hotspots for Educators who are having bad Zoom connection.
Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Gary Northouse, to approve Extension vouchers. Motion
carried.
Amy Olson gave the grounds and maintenance and Youth & Agriculture Center report.
General maintenance continues and wash racks are stained. Racetrack lighting is complete, being
under budget at $75,802.79. The grounds will be receiving $150 in free LED lights from
Crescent Electric due to having to purchase two brackets from Klondike Welding at a cost of
$54. Landscaping work around the arena area is complete at a cost of $3,726.31.
Amy Olson presented Fair and Fairgrounds business.
Discussion was held on when Grant County buildings will be open. Department heads meet two
times a week sharing thoughts and plans. Amy is working on getting signage for Fairgrounds
Buildings and more hand sanitizer.
Amy is planning the drive-in movie to be held August 15.
Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Roger Guthrie, to approve fairgrounds vouchers. Motion
carried.
Lancaster FFA is planning a drive through for dairy products to be held at the Fairgrounds. Farm
Bureau is planning a drive by supper.
Alicia Prill-Adams coordinated a group of people to propose holding a Grant County Summer
Showdown with a one-day show for swine, sheep, beef and goats, with both breeding and market
classes. The show of multiple species would be held the same day (August 17) with different
show times for each species. The group proposes a two-day dairy show (August 21 & 22). There
will not be an auction or terminal show. It will not be a 4-H show. Only Grant County youth will
be able to exhibit. A vet will do check-ins. Pre-registration will be done to determine numbers.
There will be 6-8 exhibits in a class to allow for social distancing. Exhibitors will complete
waivers ahead of time.
Discussion was held on the proposals.
Motion by Pat Schroeder to allow the shows as presented. Motion dies due to lack of a second.
Motion by Roger Guthrie, seconded by Mike Lieurance, to allow the one-day livestock show as
presented, and a one-day dairy show. One no vote. Motion carried.
There will be no cost to hold the shows.
Sara Burks, representing the Southwest Regional Rodeo, discussed holding the annual Wisconsin
High School Rodeo at the Fairgrounds. The Rodeo runs Friday through Sunday.
Motion by Roger Guthrie, seconded by Gary Northouse, to allow the Wisconsin High School
Rodeo to be held on the Fairgrounds for one day. One no vote. Motion carried.
Motion by Mike Lieurance, seconded by Mark Stead, to pay livestock claims in the amount of
$465 and $620 for a total of $1085 to the Grant County Humane Society. Motion carried.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by John Patcle, to adjourn. The next regular scheduled meeting
will be planned for August 17, 2020, at 9:00 a.m.
