FAIR COMMITTEE MEETING
Monday, April 18, 2022
9:00 a.m.
The April 18 meeting was held in the South Room of the Youth & Agriculture Center and by
Zoom. The meeting was called to order by Chairman Pat Schroeder. Present in person were
Chairman Schroeder, Roger Guthrie, Mark Stead, John Patcle, Mike Lieurance, Gary Northouse,
Bob Keeney, Amy Olson, Lori Vesperman, Lynn Perkins, Shane Drinkwater, James Schneider,
Amanda Cauffman, Charisse Orth and Bev Doll. Present by Zoom were Garry Pluemer, Amanda
Degenhardt, Tonya White, and Herald Independent.
The meeting notice was posted at the Extension Office, Youth & Agriculture Center,
Administration Building, on the Grant County website and emailed to media.
Motion by Roger Guthrie, seconded by John Patcle, to approve the amended agenda. Motion
carried.
Motion by Mike Lieurance, seconded by Gary Northouse, to approve minutes of the meeting
held March 28, 2022. Motion carried.
Grant County Extension and Youth & Agriculture Center business was presented.
Educator reports were given by Charisse Orth, James Schneider and Bev Doll, with hand written
reports from Jessa Engelken and Joe Bonnell. Amanda Cauffman - Grant County, Jackie
McCarville - Green County and Josh Kamps - Lafayette County presented on the Regional
Agriculture plan.
Lynn Perkins, gave the AED Director update. She shared information on COWS, an orientation
program for newly elected officials. The Area 17 Educators Spring Meeting being held in Green
County on April 22 will focus on reporting.
The committee reviewed the 16 Grant County Tourism Grant applications presented at the
March 28 meeting. A total of $7,000 was requested with $5,000 available for awards. The
Committee evaluated and rated the applications. Motion by Roger Guthrie, seconded by Gary
Northouse, to partially fund all proposals, dividing the $5,000 between 12 organizations that
applied. Motion carried. One no vote.
Motion by Gary Northouse, seconded by John Patcle, to approve Extension vouchers. Motion
carried.
Amy Olson gave the grounds and maintenance and Youth & Agriculture Center report.
One of the heaters in the Livestock Facility needed to be replaced at a cost of $2,875.00. There
was an issue with the bulk tank in the milk house not cooling milk during a recent event.
Maintenance sanitized it and Murray’s will look at it. Trees on the fairgrounds have not been
removed yet due to windy days.
Amy Olson presented Fair and Fairgrounds Business.
Amy is starting to get supplies for the food stand. The Breitsprecker memorial bench will be put
in the entry way of the Youth & Ag Center. Amy is checking into credit/debit card payment
options for this year’s fair.
The plan for poultry at the 2022 fair is to move forward as in past years. Poultry ID is July 7.
Amy will reach out to 4-H and FFA contacts to see of anyone is interested in becoming certified
to be a tester.
Amy gave an update of the District Meeting held in Vernon County on April 13. Amy will work
on a form for exhibitors to fill out showing they are in good standing with the organization they
choose to exhibit under. The form will exclude 4-H and FFA, since information on those
organizations will be known.
Amy shared plans and progress of Movie Night being held June 10.
Jacob Burks, West Grant Saddle Club, presented a proposal for fencing at the horse arena area.
Motion by Roger Guthrie, seconded by Mike Lieurance, to allow West Grant Saddle Club to
install fence by the horse arena and have the fairgrounds pay for approximately 60 feet. Motion
carried.
Amy would like to start checking into the cost of a different truck for the fairgrounds. The
current truck was bought in 2014 for $9,600. Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Mike
Lieurance, to have Amy check into the cost of replacing the truck to get an estimated amount for
the 2023 budget. Motion carried.
The Fairest of the Fair Banquet is May 3.
Amy gave the Fair Director’s report.
Motion by John Patcle, seconded by Mike Lieurance, to approve Fairgrounds vouchers. Motion
carried.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by Roger Guthrie, to take the livestock claims in the amount of
$480 to the County Board, recommending not to pay $160 each for surrendered dogs. Motion
carried.
The next regular scheduled meeting will be held May 16, 2022.
Motion by Mark Stead, seconded by John Patcle, to adjourn. Adjourned at 11:10 a.m.
