FAIR COMMITTEE MEETING
Monday, February 19, 2024
9:00 a.m.
The January meeting was held in the Extension Office Conference Room at the Youth &
Agriculture Center and by Zoom. The meeting was called to order by Chairman Pat Schroeder.
Present in person were Chairman Schroeder, Roger Guthrie, Gary Northouse, Joe Mumm, Kathy
Kopp, Porter Wagner, Bob Keeney, Amy Olson, Lori Vesperman, Shane Drinkwater, Lynn
Perkins, Bev Doll, James Schneider, Jordyn Sattler, Jenny Dixon and Allison Adrian. Present by
Zoom were Jackie McCarville, Tonya White, Grant County Herald Independent and Tabitha
Wallin.
The meeting notice was posted at the Extension Office, Youth & Agriculture Center,
Administration Building, on the Grant County website and emailed to media.
Motion by Gary Northouse, seconded by Kathy Kopp, to approve the agenda. Motion carried
Motion by Roger Guthrie, seconded by Joe Mumm, to approve the minutes of the meetings held
January 29 and February 12, 2024. Motion carried.
Educator updates were given by Bev Doll, James Schneider, Jackie McCarville, Jordyn Sattler,
Jenny Dixon reported on the 4-H program area and Lynn Perkins shared Maggie Milcarek’s
report.
Lynn Perkins gave the AED update. The Iowa County Human Development Relationship
position will be posted for the fourth time. Area 17 Regional Livestock Educator, Kim Kester,
will start on February 20.
Motion by Roger Guthrie, seconded by Kathy Kopp, to approve the Extension vouchers. Motion
carried.
Grounds and maintenance is work as usual. Brenda Schneider is back to work. The lawnmower
was delivered. Steve McPhail dropped off for the dairy barn.
Grant County Fair and Fairgrounds Business
The committee reviewed discussion from the February 12 meeting regarding space in the
livestock barn for animal exhibits at the fair. Motion by Gary Northouse, seconded by Joe
Mumm to go with the resulting consensus of the meeting allowing the following number of
species per exhibitor at the fair: beef - 3, goats - 6, sheep - 6, dairy unlimited. Motion carried.
Allison Adrian, Fairest of the Fair, shared her thoughts and ideas for bettering the experience of
the Fairest of Fair candidates.
Spring District Meeting is April 9 at the Chula Vista and the fall meeting is October 9.
Discussion was held on concerns with the success of movie night in 2024. The committee
decided not to have a movie night.
Tabitha Wallin, Lancaster Jaycees, asked the committee to waive the fee for use of the Youth &
Agriculture Center for an Easter Egg Hunt. Motion by Porter Wagner, seconded by Kathy Kopp,
to waive the fee for use of the Youth & Agriculture Center on March 23, 2024. Motion carried.
Amy informed the committee she is able to apply for a DRA grant for the Fairgrounds and would
like to apply for a pavilion. Motion by Kathy Kopp, seconded by Porter Wager to have Amy
apply for the DRA grant. Motion carried.
Discussion was held on having separate swine classes for gilts and barrows at the fair. It was
decided not enough information was available to know the outcome of separating the classes at
this time. Motion by Porter Wagner, seconded by Joe Mumm, to table separating swine classes
until next year and do further research. Motion carried.
All event ticket prices will remain the same as in 2023. Miss Wisconsin will be at the Fair
Thursday, 3:30-7:00 p.m. for a cost of $200.00. Strolling acts and other entertainment was
discussed. Ax throwing is available for Friday, Saturday and Sunday for $800 and motel rooms.
They handle the cost of throwing. Motion by Gary Northouse, seconded by Roger Guthrie, to
have ax throwing at the 2024 Fair. Motion carried.
Payment to bands performing at the fair was discussed. Motion by Kathy Kopp, seconded by
Porter Wagner to raise payment to $125 per person. Motion carried.
Fair office help is needed due to the current part-time employee not returning. Amy will move
forward with filling the position.
Motion by Roger Guthrie, seconded by Joe Mumm to sign contracts with Remember with
Randy - $200, Docs Unlimited - $375, Badger State Tractor Pullers - $17,500. Motion carried.
Amy checked with Debbie from DATCP and there are no rules regarding mixing goat and swine
exhibits at the fair.
Motion by Gary Northouse, seconded by Porter Wagner, to approve the vouchers. Motion
carried.
Motion by Porter Wagner, seconded by Kathy Kopp to approve three livestock claims in the
amount of $480, excluding the out of county claim. Motion carried.
Motion by Porter Wagner, seconded by Kathy Kopp, to adjourn until April 15 or the call of the
chair. Motion carried.
