FAIR COMMITTEE MEETING
Monday, April 15, 2024
9:00 a.m.
The April meeting was held in the Extension Office Conference Room at the Youth &
Agriculture Center and by Zoom. The meeting was called to order by Chairman Pat Schroeder.
Present in person were Chairman Schroeder, Roger Guthrie, Gary Northouse, Joe Mumm, Kathy
Kopp, Porter Wagner, Bob Keeney, Amy Olson, Lori Vesperman, Lynn Perkins, Bev Doll,
James Schneider, Charisse Orth, Kim Kester, Mark Vosberg and Jacquelyn Varholik. Present by
Zoom were Tonya White, Shane Drinkwater and Denise Dixon.
The meeting notice was posted at the Extension Office, Youth & Agriculture Center,
Administration Building, on the Grant County website and emailed to media.
Motion by Roger Guthrie, seconded by Gary Northouse, to approve the agenda. Motion carried
Motion by Joe Mumm, seconded by Kathy Kopp, to approve the minutes of the meeting held
February 19, 2024. Motion carried.
Educator updates were given by Bev Doll, Charisse Orth, James Schneider and Kim Kester.
Lynn Perkins shared Maggie Milcarek’s report. Kim introduced herself and gave a presentation
on the Swath Grazing Research Project.
Lynn Perkins gave the AED update. Kathy Lange, FoodWIse Nutrition Coordinator for Area 17,
has resigned. Lynn shared the Ask an Agriculture Question flyer with the committee. There are
still plans to refill Iowa County Human Development Relationship position. Catherine
Neiswender, Extension Assistant Dean, is retiring. Lynn shared information on the Ag &
Extension Education member training and the County Officials Workshop.
The snowmobile resolution was presented to the committee. Motion by Porter Wagner, seconded
by Roger Guthrie, to send the snowmobile resolution authorizing participation in public funding
for snowmobile trails in Grant County for the 2024-2025 snowmobile year, on to the full County
Board for approval. Motion carried.
Farm Progress Days Scholarship applications were reviewed. Motion by Porter Wagner, seconded by
Kathy Kopp, to award the Farm Progress Days Scholarship to Jackson VanNatta. Motion carried.
Motion by Roger Guthrie, seconded by Joe Mumm, to approve the Extension vouchers. Motion
carried.
Amy Olson gave the grounds and maintenance and Youth & Agriculture Center report.
Remaining vehicles will be out of storage this week.
Jacquelyn Varholik requested use of the Youth & Agriculture Center for a fundraiser for
Christmas for Kids of Southwest Wisconsin. Motion by Gary Northouse, seconded by Joe
Mumm, to allow the organization to use the Youth & Agriculture Center on December 1, 2024,
at no cost for their fund raiser. Motion carried.
Denise Dixon, asked the committee to waive the fee for use of the Youth & Agriculture Center
for You Matter - Mental Health Awareness Walk. Motion by Joe Mumm, seconded by Roger
Guthrie to waive the fee for use of the Youth & Agriculture Center on May 4, 2024. Motion
carried.
Grant County Fair and Fairgrounds Business
Amy received a request for possible use of the Livestock Facility for an electronic recycling
event on June 15.
Amy would like to apply for a grant through the Lancaster Community fund asking for six new
baby changing stations for buildings on the Fairgrounds. The application is due May 1. Motion
by Kathy Kopp, seconded by Gary Northouse to allow Amy to apply for the grant requesting
$1,712.65. Motion carried.
The committee agreed with Amy to hold the Fairest of the Fair Banquet at the Meat Shoppe. The
banquet will be held May 7 at 6:00 p.m.
Amy updated the committee on the DRA Grant Application. Amy would like to apply for a Core
Grant instead of a Mission Grant.
Amy gave an update with progress of fair brochures, trophies, judges and the fairbook.
Discussion was held on the carnival and pricing.
Amy was able to find a replacement for the Fair Office LTE position due to a vacancy.
Motion by Joe Mumm, seconded by Gary Northouse to sign a contract with Swing Crew in the
amount of $1,100. Motion carried.
At their March 21 meeting the Livestock Auction Committee approved putting a new sound
system in the sale pavilion. Clerking will be located outside the sale pavilion under a tent. They
also approved putting a Bluetooth TV and stand in the tent area.
Motion by Gary Northouse, seconded by Kathy Kopp, to approve the vouchers. Motion carried.
Motion by Roger Guthrie, seconded by Joe Mumm, to pay livestock claims in the amount of
$160 to the Grant County Humane Society. The County Board approved the claims at the March
meeting, contingent upon this committee’s approval. Motion carried.
Motion by Gary Northouse, seconded by Roger Guthrie, to adjourn until May 20. Motion
carried.
