FAIR COMMITTEE MEETING
Monday, June 17, 2024
9:00 a.m.
The June meeting was held in the Extension Office Conference Room at the Youth &
Agriculture Center and by Zoom. The meeting was called to order by Chairman Roger Guthrie.
Present in person were Chairman Guthrie, Pat Schroeder, Gary Northouse, Joe Mumm, Kathy
Kopp, Mark Vosberg, Bob Keeney, Amy Olson, Lori Vesperman, James Schneider, Bev Doll,
Charisse Orth, Kim Kester, Lynn Perkins and Sally Harper. Present by Zoom were, Shane
Drinkwater and Tonya White.
The meeting notice was posted at the Extension Office, Youth & Agriculture Center,
Administration Building, on the Grant County website and emailed to media.
Motion by Joe Mumm, seconded by Pat Schroeder, to approve the agenda. Motion carried
Motion by Gary Northouse, seconded by Mark Vosberg, to approve the minutes of the meeting
held May 20, 2024. Motion carried.
Educator reports were given by Bev Doll, James Schneider, Charisse Orth and Kim Kester. Lynn
Perkins gave Maggie Milcarek’s report. The FoodWIse Nutrition Educator position for Area 17
has been reposted. Screening of applicants for the Iowa County Human Development &
Relationships Educator are being held today.
Lynn Perkins, presented the Division of Extension - County Partnership Guidance, dated
August 1, 2021. Review and discussion was held on the document.
Motion by Joe Mumm, seconded by Gary Northouse, to approve the Extension vouchers. Motion
carried.
Amy Olson gave the grounds and maintenance and Youth & Agriculture Center report.
Maintenance will be meeting with the livestock superintendents on Monday, June 24, 2:45 p.m.
to discuss stalling of animals in the barn at fair time.
There has been a compatibility issue with new computer connections and the projector in the
Auditorium. The IT department has been working on the issue and at this time an Airtame has
solved the issue.
There will be an electronic recycling event on July 13 in the Livestock Facility.
Maintenance, along with some committee members, will start the process of repairing poles in
the dairy barn.
Grant County Fair and Fairgrounds business was covered.
Marketing materials for the Fair are ready to be distributed.
Sally Harper attended the meeting to discuss avian influenza (H5N1) in regards to lactating dairy
cattle at the fair. The Division of Animal Health wants to know by June 17 what the fairs in
Wisconsin that are having dairy shows plan to do. The Wisconsin Association of Fairs is having
a meeting for discussion with all fairs and Dr. Konkle on June 20. Amy and the committee will
keep monitoring the situation and discuss it further at the July 15 meeting.
Amy will get rain insurance prices for Thursday and Saturday night grandstand events. She is
working on tent placement and the number of tents for the fair.
Swine loadout for the Fair was discussed. Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Mark Vosberg,
to do a trial year of loading pigs out on Monday after the fair. Loadout was previously done on
Sunday. Motion carried.
The superintendent and organization meetings will be August 1 starting at 6:00 p.m.
Motion by Gary Northouse, seconded by Pat Schroeder, to award Mark Stead, Gary and Pam
Craugh, and Dave Knoke as Outstanding Fair persons. Motion carried.
Amy shared the number of livestock identified for the 2024 fair. She is working on getting
rangers and gators to use during the fair.
The Jaycees want to add nachos, chips and pretzel bites with cheese sauce to their menu. The
consensus of the committee was to allow them to add the pretzel bites with cheese.
Amy would like to have a contest offering a Mega Pass to an exhibitor that takes the best selfie
working a project they are bringing to the fair. They will need to send the photo to Amy.
Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Joe Mumm to sign contracts with Saint Clements,
Knights of Columbus and the No End in Sight band. Motion carried.
Jim Murray has a freezer/cooler available. Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Gary
Northouse, to rent the cooler for $1,000 for the 2024 fair and ask Jim for the possibility to
purchase the freezer/cooler in 2025. Motion carried.
Motion by Gary Northouse, seconded by Kopp, to approve the vouchers. Motion carried.
Motion by Joe Mumm, seconded by Mark Vosberg, to adjourn until July 15. Motion carried.
