HomeMy WebLinkAbout07 Minutes July 15AGRICULTURE AND EXTENSION EDUCATION/ FAIR COMMITTEE MEETING Monday, July 15, 2024 9:00 a.m. The July meeting was held in the Extension Office Conference Room at the Youth & Agriculture Center and by Zoom. The meeting was called to order by Chairman Roger Guthrie. Present in person were Chairman Guthrie, Joe Mumm, Pat Schroeder, Gary Northouse, Kathy Kopp, Mark Vosberg, Bob Keeney, Amy Olson, Lori Vesperman, James Schneider, Bev Doll, Charisse Orth, Jordyn Sattler, Maggie Milcarek and Lynn Perkins. Present by Zoom were, Shane Drinkwater, Tonya White and Lisa Kneller. The meeting notice was posted at the Extension Office, Youth & Agriculture Center, Administration Building, on the Grant County website and emailed to media. Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Kathy Kopp, to approve the agenda. Motion carried Motion by Joe Mumm, seconded by Gary Northouse, to approve the minutes of the meeting held June 17, 2024. Motion carried. Educator reports were given by Bev Doll, James Schneider, Charisse Orth, Jordyn Sattler and Maggie Milcarek. Lynn Perkins shared a fact sheet, Keep Cattle Cool and Comfortable in Summer, complied by Kim Kester, Lynn Perkins gave the AED update. Interviews for the Iowa County Human Development and Relationships Educator were held and an offer will be made for the position. The vacant FoodWIse Educator position for the four counties in Area 17 will be filled. Iowa County is providing office space for a Regional Nutrient Pest Management Outreach Specialist. Motion by Joe Mumm, seconded by Kathy Kopp, to approve the Extension vouchers. Motion carried. Amy Olson gave the grounds and maintenance and Youth & Agriculture Center report. Lisa Kneller, from Kuusakoski Recycling, shared information on the electronic recycling event held on the Fairgrounds on July 13. The event was very successful with a preliminary estimate of 100,000 lbs. collected. The line had to be cut off due to the noon end time and packaging supplies available. Discussion was held on the possibility of future collections. Fans will be purchased for the rabbit/poultry barn with the $500 donation from the Livestock Trust. Maintenance staff will start working on the poles in the dairy barn. The refrigerator from the backshack will be moved to replace the one in grandstand that is not working. Jim Murray fixed the milkhouse pump due to issues during the District Holstein Show. Fair & Fairgrounds Business was covered. Schedules during the fair were discussed. Committee meetings will start at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday and Friday, and at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Other meetings may be scheduled at the call of the Chair. Amy shared the buyer’s form for the Livestock Auction with the Committee. It is now a full page to fit all of the information. Amy will get a TV for the appreciation tent to view the Livestock Auction. Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Gary Northouse, to purchase rain insurance for Thursday and Saturday nights of the fair for 6:00-10:00 p.m. Motion carried. Motion by Roger Guthrie, seconded by Gary Northouse, to have lactating dairy cows as normal at the fair this year. Motion carried. Discussion was held on Monday morning loadout for swine. Processing plants need animals by 6:00 a.m. Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Mark Vosberg, to give county employees free admission to the fair. Motion carried. Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Mark Vosberg, to set superintendents meal prices at $10.00. Motion carried. Brenda Kluesner will be starting as temporary Fair Office help during the fair due to the previous person not working out. Amy would like to replace a temporary maintenance worker that helped annually the past few years during the fair, but will not be returning this year. Channel 15 News will be doing their live weather forecast at the Fair on Wednesday evening, and will also interview Amy. Amy shared the count of June pre-sales tickets. Amy visited the Lafayette County Fair and spoke with a mechanical bull vendor. She will reach out to see if he is available to come to the Grant County Fair. Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Kathy Kopp to sign contracts. Motion carried. Motion by Kathy Kopp, seconded by Joe Mumm, to approve the vouchers. Motion carried. Motion by Pat Schroeder, seconded by Mark Vosberg, to accept the livestock claims and pass on to the County Board after clarification from Kathy Kopp checking into some of the claims. Motion carried. Motion by Joe Mumm, seconded by Pat Schroeder, to adjourn until the August 15 Fair meeting or the call of the Chair. The next regular Ag & Extension/Fair Committee Meeting will be August 26.
