HomeMy WebLinkAboutlawinforminutes07-09-12GRANT COUNTY LAW ENFORCEMENT COMMITTEE MEETING GRANT COUNTY LAW ENFORCEMENT CENTER Lancaster WI 53813 July 9, 2012 The Grant County Law Enforcement Committee was called to order July 9, 2012 at 10:10 a.m. by Chairman Bob Scallon. The following members and personnel were present: LAW ENFORCEMENT COMMITTEE: Lester Jantzen, Vincent Loeffelholz, John Patcle, John Beinborn, Pat Schroeder and Larry Wolf. GUESTS: Sheriff Keith Govier, Chief Deputy Jack Johnson, Coroner Ron Sturmer and Kelly Bird, Recording Secretary. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kelly Bird verified the agenda had been posted at the County Clerk’s office and Courthouse by Linda G ebhard. Kelly posted the agenda in the Sheriff’s Department lobby. Lester second by John B. approved the agenda. John B. second by Vincent approved the minutes from the previous meeting. The bills were approved in motions by Vincent and seconded by Lester. All above motions carried. There is no Coroner’s Report for this month. Under Sheriff’s Briefing, Sheriff Govier stated that there has only been 1 fatality so far this year. This is below average from the previous years. The jail population has increased in the last month, with some overcro wding. Vernon or Sauk County Jail will house inmates for a daily fee if needed. Under Training, Sheriff Govier will be sending 1 or 2 Deputies to the VisionAIR Conference in San Diego in the fall. Under Grants, Sheriff Govier notified the committee that the Sheriff’s Department will be receiving a $4,000.00 Equipment Grant for participating in Clicket or Ticket. The Sheriff’s Department did not qualify for some grants through the Bureau of Transportation due to the numbers of fatalities being down. Sergeant Brian Bierman has applied to receive three portable preliminary breath tests at no cost. There is no New Business at this time. Under Old Business, Sheriff Govier gave an update on the dog bite incident that occurred last month. The three Pit bulls were voluntarily brought in by the owners and euthanized . There seems to be an increase in issues with this type of dog. There were over 60 applications received for the eligibility list for the deputy po sition. An interview panel will interview 16 to 18 applicants. John Patcle will be present to listen to interviews. Sheriff Govier would like to clarify that his attendance at the National Sheriff’s Conference was mandatory due to his participating in the Committee for Cold Case Crime Victim Services. Sheriff Govier also notified the committee that as an elected official he does not need permission to attend training or out of state conferences. Committee member Pat Schroeder thanked Sheriff Govier for taking a voluntary 10% decrease in wages the first year of his term. Under Maintenance, Chief Deputy Jack Johnson discussed some confusion over the Elevator Maintenance Contract. There is no Public Forum to discuss at this time. Chairman Bob Scallon congratulated the Grant County Jail on passing the annual inspection. Chief Deputy Jack Johnson discussed the need for purchasing some radios to be in compliance. This money is not in the budget. The item will be put on the agenda next month for further discussion. It was motioned by John B and second by Lester to adjourn to August 13, 2012 at 10:00 am following The Grant County Emergency/Disaster Service Committee Meeting. Motion carried.
