GRANT COUNTY LAW ENFORCEMENT CENTER

The Grant County Law Enforcement Committee was called to order August 13, 2012 at 10:23 a.m. by Chairman
Bob Scallon. The following members and personnel were present:
LAW ENFORCEMENT COMMITTEE: Lester Jantzen, Vincent Loeffelholz, John Patcle, John Beinborn, and
Larry Wolf. Pat Schroeder asked to be excused.
GUESTS: Sheriff Keith Govier, Chief Deputy Jack Johnson, Sgt. Nate Dreckman, Coroner Ron Sturmer and Kelly
Bird, Recording Secretary.

Kelly Bird verified the agenda had been posted at the County Clerk’s office and Courthouse by Linda Gebhard .
Kelly posted the agenda in the Sheriff’s Department lobby. Lester second by John B. approved the agenda. Vincent
second by John B. approved the minutes from the previous meeting. The bills were approved in motions by Vincent
and seconded by John B. All above motions carried.
Under the Coroner’s Report for this month it was motioned by Lester and seconded by Vincent to approve the bills.
Motion carried.
Under Sheriff’s Briefing, Sheriff Govier reminded the committee that as of August 14 the new Sheriff takes over
office. The jail count was at 61 as of this morning. The jail has had some overcrowding this month, but has not had
to ship out any inmates to be housed at other counties.
There has been 1 fatality since the last meeting which is the second one for this year. A medical event was a factor
in the second fatality.
There is an ongoing investigation of an incident that involved an 8 year old boy being fatally shot. The incident
happened in Jamestown Township.
The Sheriff’s Department is still in the process of hiring deputies to fill the vacancies in the department. The Sheriff
will follow-up at next months meeting.
Sheriff Govier gave an overview of the years he has been in office. T he members were thanked for their support
over the years. The committee members congratulated Sheriff Govier on his retirement.
Under Training, Chairman Bob Scallon questioned whether there was somewhere closer we could send someone for
the training that is supposed to be held in San Diego. Sheriff Govier stated that this is a 1 time training only
available in San Diego due to the company switching hands recently.
There are no grants to discuss at this time.
Under New Business there was an update on the rental property on Madison Street. The occupants were sent a letter
with a 30 day notice to remove their property from the building. After the 30 days are up, if the property has not
been removed, the Sheriff’s Department will start the eviction process.
The Public Property and Computer Requests were presented by Chief Deputy Jack Johnson. It was motioned by
John P. and seconded by John B. to send the requests onto to Public Property. Motion carried.
Sgt. Nate Dreckman, who will take Keith Govier’s place as the new Sheriff, attended a meeting to discuss the 2013
Budget. Sgt. Dreckman feels that the budget for 2013 looks promising. The Sheriff’s Department will present the
2013 Budget to the committee next month.
Under Old Business, a representative from Comelec was present to discuss the radio upgrade that is required for
2013. The Sheriff’s Department will need $26,860.00 to pay for the final step in the upgrade. The money is not in
the budget at this time. It was motioned by Lester and secon ded by John P. to send this request onto Public
Property. Motion carried.
Under Maintenance, Chief Deputy Jack Johnson stated that Leroy Pickel is out on Family Medical Leave because of
surgery he had done. It was decided that Kelly would send a card to Leroy from the committee.
There is no Public Forum to discuss at this time.
It was motioned by Vincent and second by John B. to adjourn to September 10, 2012 at 10:00 am following The
Grant County Emergency/Disaster Service Committee Meeting. Motion carried.
