The Grant County Law Enforcement Committee was called to order September 10, 2012 at 10:45 a.m. by Chairman
Bob Scallon. The following members and personnel were present:
LAW ENFORCEMENT COMMITTEE: Pat Schroeder, Vincent Loeffelholz, John Patcle, John Beinborn, and
Larry Wolf. Lester Jantzen asked to be excused.
GUESTS: Sheriff Nate Dreckman, Chief Deputy Jack Johnson, Coroner Ron Sturmer and Kelly Bird, Recording
Secretary.

Kelly Bird verified the agenda had been posted at the County Clerk’s office and Courthouse by Linda Gebhard.
Kelly posted the agenda in the Sheriff’s Department lobby. John B. second by Vincent approved the agenda. John
P. second by Larry approved the minutes from the previous meeting. The bills were approved in motions by John B.
and seconded by Vincent. All above motions carried.
Under the Coroner’s Report for this month it was motioned by John P. and seconded by Vincent to approve the bills.
Motion carried. Coroner Sturmer handed out the Budget for 2013. The proposed budget was at a 0.9% increase
from last year due to the amount of autopsies done. It was motioned by Pat and seconded by John B. to reduce
lodging and supplies to bring the budget to a 0% increase and send both budgets. Motion carried.
Under Public Forum a relative was present on behalf of James Budworth. Mr. Budworth is not pleased with how the
Sheriff’s Department is handling a current investigation that he is involved in. After speaking with Corporation
Counsel, Sheriff Dreckman explained that this is a civil matter involving financial issues and the Sheriff’s
Department will not get involved.
Chairman Bob Scallon questioned who was involved with Crimestoppers. He received a phone call at his home
from someone who was with Crimestoppers but was disconnected. Sheriff Dreckman said there has been some
phone solicitation for funds recently.
Under Sheriff’s Briefing, there were 59 inmates as of this morning with an average of 54 for the month of August.
The Jail Administrator has ordered more electronic monitoring devices to have available to current inmates that may
qualify for that program. There have been no fatalities since the last meeting.
The Sheriff’s Department has hired 3 new deputies to fill the open positions within the departmen t. The Deputies
were hired from Dispatch which will leave 3 open Dispatch Positions.
There is no training to discuss at this time.
Under Grants, Chief Deputy Jack Johnson notified the committee of a Click It Enforcement grant in the amount of
$25,000.00 with a 25% cash match. The cash match can be taken care of through straight time. It was motioned by
Pat and seconded by John P. to apply for the grant. Motion carried.
Under New Business Chief Deputy Johnson presented three different Budgets to the committee with each having a
slight increase. The Sheriff’s Department was asked to bring a new budget back to the committee next month with a
0% increase. It was motioned by Pat and seconded by Bob S. to take $45,000 out of Communications to make the
budget a 0% increase. Motioned carried with Larry Wolf voting no.
Sheriff Dreckman updated the committee on the dispatch consolidation with Platteville that has been discussed in
the past. Sheriff Dreckman will have a meeting next week about this and will update the committee next month.
A Dispatch Supervisor position being added to the department was discussed. This would mean taking the title Lead
Dispatcher away from the current Lead Dispatcher and also eliminating the 911 Coordinator position . These people
would be able to apply for the position if desired. The cost to the county would be very minimal. This would be a
working supervisor position that would oversee the duties of the Dispatchers and pick up the 911 Coordinator job
duties. It was motioned by Bob S. and seconded by Vincent to approve the position. Motion carried.
There are some very costly repairs that are going to need to be done in the Jail on the doors. It was asked to take this
into consideration when looking at the 2013 budget.
Sheriff Nate Dreckman will be using retired Sheriff Keith Govier’s squad car for his vehicle.
Under Old Business, Sheriff Dreckman updated the committee on the rental property. The current residents are
vacating the property. Sheriff Dreckman will follow up with the committee next month as to what they would like
done with the building.
Under Maintenance, Chief Deputy Johnson stated that Leroy Pickel is doing well but still off on Family Medical
Leave because of surgery he had done.
It was motioned by John P. and second by Vincent to adjourn to October 8, 2012 at 10:00 am following The Grant
County Emergency/Disaster Service Committee Meeting. Motion carried.
