GRANT COUNTY LAW ENFORCEMENT CENTER

The Grant County Law Enforcement Committee was called to order at 10:52 a.m. by the County Board
Chairman Bob Keeney. The following members and personnel were present:
LAW ENFORCEMENT COMMITTEE: Larry Wolf, Lester Jantzen, Pat Schroeder, Bob Scallon, Gary Ranum
and John Patcle.
GUESTS: Sheriff Nate Dreckman, Chief Deputy Jack Johnson, Coroner Ron Sturmer, and Kelly Bird,
Recording Secretary.
Kelly Bird verified the agenda had been posted at the County Clerk’s office and Courthouse. Kelly
posted the agenda in the Sheriff’s Department lobby. Pat second by Lester approved the agenda as
mailed. John P. second by Bob S. approved the minutes from the previous meeting. The bills for the
Sheriff’s Office were approved in motions by Bob S. and seconded by Bob K. The bills for the Coroner
were approved in motions by Bob S. and seconded by Lester. All above motions carried.
Bob Scallon does not want to be re-elected as the Chairman for the Law Enforcement Committee due
to other commitments. John P. second by Bob S. would like to nominate Pat Schroeder as Chairman
for the Law Enforcement Committee. Gary would like to cast a unanimous vote second by Bob S. to
have Pat Schroeder as the Law Enforcement Committee Chairman. Motion carried. Bob S. would like
to nominate Lester for Vice-Chairman. It was motioned by Larry and seconded by Gary to cast a
unanimous vote for Lester as Vice-Chairman. Motion carried. Pat nominated Gary for Secretary,
seconded by John P. It was motioned by Pat and seconded by John P. to cast a unanimous vote for
Gary for Secretary. Motion carried.
There is no Public Forum to discuss at this time.
There is no Coroner’s Report to discuss at this time.
Under Sheriff’s Briefing, Sheriff Dreckman passed out the activity report for discussion. There are 46
inmates in jail with no inmates being housed out of county. Karen Walls has been hired as a Female
Jailer. She was previously employed at the Grant County Jail and comes from the Boscobel Police
Department. There have been a few employees off work due to Workmen’s Compensation injuries.
This has resulted in some overtime accrual. The Heroine Presentations have been well attended. The
Employees Grant County Sheriff’s Office held a 5k run to benefit the Grant County S.A.F.E. Coalition.
The event was called “Run from the Cops” and was a huge success with 278 runners/walkers
registering for the event. A dance for DARE Graduates was held on Sunday, May 11. This is Police
Memorial Week with a showing of “Heroes Behind the Badge on Monday, the Law Enforcement
Memorial on Wednesday and a Pistol Shoot on Thursday.
Bob Scallon brought up the topic of parking at the Boscobel Boat Landing. The Parks Committee met
on this issue but did not act on it. Bob Keeney will check with the new Corporation Counsel as well as
the County Clerk to see if anything has been done on this issue.
Under Building Maintenance, Don Parkins who is currently a Male Jailer has been hired as the new
Maintenance Worker. Chief Deputy Johnson will send out a list of all maintenance issues at the
Sheriff’s Office.
Chief Deputy Johnson has talked to the Highway Department about receiving the old generator in
return for seal coating the parking lot at the Sheriff’s Office. The cost of seal coating the parking lot
and the amount the generator is worth are around $3,000.00. The committee members are in favor of
trading the generator for seal coating the parking lot at the Sheriff’s Office. Any added expense would
be taken to Public Property.
There is no training to discuss at this time.
There are no Grants to discuss at this time.
Under New Business, the Committee Members will take a tour of the Law Enforcement Building at the
end of the meeting.
There is no Old Business to discuss at this time.
It was motioned by John P. and seconded by Bob S. to adjourn to June 9, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. following
the Grant County Emergency/Disaster Service Committee Meeting. Motion carried.
