GRANT COUNTY LAW ENFORCEMENT CENTER

The Grant County Law Enforcement Committee was called to order at 10:45 a.m. by the County Board
Chairman Bob Keeney. The following members and personnel were present:
LAW ENFORCEMENT COMMITTEE: Larry Wolf, Lester Jantzen, Pat Schroeder, Bob Scallon, Gary Ranum
and John Patcle.
GUESTS: Sheriff Nate Dreckman, Chief Deputy Jack Johnson, Coroner Ron Sturmer, Steve Braun,
Emergency Government, and Kelly Bird, Recording Secretary.
Kelly Bird verified the agenda had been posted at the County Clerk’s office and Courthouse. Kelly
posted the agenda in the Sheriff’s Department lobby. John second by Bob S. approved the agenda as
mailed. Larry second by Bob K. approved the minutes from the previous meeting. The bills for the
Sheriff’s Office and Coroner were approved in motions by Bob S. and seconded by Larry. All above
motions carried.
There is no Public Forum to discuss at this time.
There is no Coroner’s Report to discuss at this time.
Under Sheriff’s Briefing, Sheriff Dreckman passed out the activity report for the past two months for
discussion. The jail count was 48 this morning with no inmates being housed out of county or on th e
Electronic Monitoring Program.
The committee was updated on the grain bin accident which resulted in the death of a 9 year old boy.
There were some questions about who was called to the incident and if the proper equipment was
used in efforts to save the boy. The equipment mentioned would not have helped under the
circumstances.
There has been an offer to fill the male jail position.
The committee was updated on the status of the cab driver fatality .
Pat Schroeder would like to commend Officer McQuillan for issuing citations to owners of Pit bulls.
This has been an ongoing issue in Liberty Township.
Under Training, Sheriff Dreckman notified the committee of a Fire/EMS/Law Enforcement Training in
July at SWTC. There is no charge for this training.
Sgt. Kasper of the Grant County Sheriff’s office and Officer Dresen of Fennimore Police Department will
be taking a grant funded online leadership course on Professional Development.
Under Grants, Platteville Wal-Mart has a $1,200.00 grant available for rifle cleaning kits and Prairie du
Chien Wal-Mart has a $1,500.00 grant available for binoculars. It was motioned by Bob S. and
seconded by Gary to send these to the Full County Board. Motion carried.
Under Maintenance, Chief Deputy Johnson passed out a list of maintenance issues at the Law
Enforcement Center. The committee would like the Law Enforcement Facility to be a priority after the
Courthouse project is finished.
Chief Deputy Johnson will contact someone to find out how much the old generator is worth. The
Grant County Highway Department quoted $8,000.00 to sealcoat the parking lot.
A private individual offered $2,500.00 to purchase a 2009 Crown Vic that is no longer being used. It
was motioned by Lester and seconded by Gary to have Chief Deputy Johnson send the vehicle to an
auction of his choice. Motion carried.
Under New Business, the Social Security Inmate Carryover Account will be tabled until next month.
A Communications Tower Study may need to be done if too many antennas are added to the one of
the towers. The cost of the study is $10,000.00 and the Sheriff’s Office will need to contribute
$5,000.00 to go towards the study. It was motioned by Gary and seconded by John to send this on to
the Executive Committee. Motion carried.
Under Old Business, the issues at the Boscobel Boat Landing were discussed. Sheriff Dreckman will
work with Attorney Wood to do more research on the subject and change the amount of the fine on
the Ordinance. The committee will be updated next month.
It was motioned by Lester and seconded by John to adjourn to August 11, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. following
the Grant County Emergency/Disaster Service Committee Meeting. Motion carried.
